Hey guys...I have been wanting to remodel my kitchen to reflect a vintage look. I want to replace my free-standing range with a built-in wall oven and cooktop from the 50's or 60's era. Anyway, yesterday while driving through a residential neighborhood I found this Hotpoint Stainless Steel Wall oven! I couldn't believe it! I knocked on the door and an elderly lady answered. I explained my interest in vintage appliances and asked if I could have the oven. She was very pleased to give it to me and said she was glad to just have it off her property. She mentioned that it had been sitting at the curb for over 2 weeks and the garbage collectors didn't take it. I asked her if there was anything wrong with it and she stated that the lower heating element didn't work anymore and the appliance repairman said that these elements aren't available...hence she decided to purchase a new oven. I have a few questions concerning this model. First of all the model # is 10RJ3. Serial # 9794895. Is this a Customline model? What year was this made, does anyone know? Do you think it is possible that I could replace the heating element at the bottom? I wondered if the repairman just wanted her to buy a new one and just told her it wasn't available. The other thing is the oven is missing the oven racks. I asked the owner about the racks and she said that they had already been thrown away. I would love to purchase some racks and a heating element for the bottom if possible if someone knows how I could find these parts. I did notice that the element appears to be in fine condition. I have had several electric ovens before and my experience has been that the calrod units usually crack or disintegrate when they go out. I am including some pictures.....

That is very cool.

What an awesome find!!! You might try calling Larry, at Modern Parts, in Parma, Ohio. He's helped me and others on this site with difficult to find appliance parts!

My Aunt

Had the same built-in Hotpoint in her kitchen, however, the controls were on the bottom of the oven, as opposed to the location in the picture. Please correct me if I am wrong, but, doesn't the 'Hotpoint' logo illuminate?

a beauty

thats very similar to the oven my parents had. Ours was 1959 vintage and was part of the appliance package the house came with new(Hotpoint cooktop and wall oven, disposal, fridge, and washer and dryer)
Awesome find, congrats!

Customline to the rescue!

Your oven is the 1956 Customline model. They also came in deluxe double oven models with built in rotiserrie and meat thermometer. Look on e-bay for your burner (that's where I found mine ). You can also try writing this guy:

Ask for part number RP44X142. I'll gather some pictures of your racks so you know what they look like. You have a nice find here. Congrats.

thanks!

Thanks guys for all the helpful information! I suspected that it was a Customline model, but wasn't sure. Also...I looked behind the Hotpoint logo and there is nothing. Basically it is a filler panel and the holes are just for venting. It reminds me of something that would be similiar to a kickplate on a dishwasher.

Hi Todd

Swell Hotpoint Oven. Not to be a party pooper, I think
yours is not designated as a "Customline" . I could be packed
fos, but I think what differentiated Customline from basic
line was the absence of a window and rotisserie. I'm sure
you will be able to find a "universal" style element pretty
easy. I am not the Customline Pro that Mr. Kevin customline is, but if the element looks intact and healthy, it might be some minor problem. Better go back and ask that lady if you can have the surface unit!!!! Great Find!!!! The kind of price
we all dream of!!!

rotisserie

Although my oven does not have a window...I do have the rotisserie accessory. The woman said she didn't have the oven racks anymore, but I forgot to mention earlier that she did have the rotisserie pieces and gave them to me. Does that change anything as far as whether or not it is a Customline series???? (crossing my fingers..LOL)

Basicline/Customline

Todd, I thought I had a pic of my Customline oven, but I guess I deleted it. I have never had mine "live" so I am
not sure about this, but where you have one button (rotisserie
motor, I'd guess) below & between the timer and the clock,
I have a second button, vertically arranged. I think the 2nd
button might be for the oven light, independent of opening the door. Mine also has a rectangular window and on the lower
right of the oven door there is the "customline" applique'.
I have some printed material and if I can figure out how to
scan it, especially if it clarifies the differences between
the two lines. Aside from the window, the light button and the script I think we have the same basic oven. Not being
a "customline" unit hardly diminishes the absolute coolness
of your oven. If you have a Habitat for Humanity Recycle
store in your area, they are a good place to cruise for these type items. They are out there, you just have to be at the right place at the right time. If there are any businesses that specialize in vintage stoves local to you, check with them for racks, sometimes they hang on to every thing they
come across to maintain their vintage stock. It is possible
that racks from a GE of the same era will fit size wise but
you will need one specific to the rotisserie set up.

Re: ACE or True Value Hardware-Appliance Stores:

Hi! Todd, I'm thinking that either the Repair Tech didn't want to bother with helping that Lady out, in repairing her Oven, or as you mentioned, he just wanted her to buy a new Oven Unit.

Anyway, we've got a particular ACE Hardware Store here where I live, that has a Rack towards the Back/Middle area of the Store, that has GE, Hotpoint and Westinghouse Stove Burner Elements and Oven/Broiler Elements and even a Model Number reference Book, to look for your Model.

We also have a True Value Hardware/Appliance Store here, that also is pretty good at locating most replacement items for Older/Vintage Appliances, as well as some older established Parts Departments.

You might check around the area where you live, to see if you have either of these Hardware/Appliance Stores nearby and see if they do carry replacement Stove and Oven Parts. Good Luck with your search and getting your great find operating again, hopefully real soon.

Peace and Great Baking, Steve
