Dating my GE fridge

I'm finding it frustrating getting a date on my new-to-me vintage GE refrigerator.

The GE dating code doesn't appear to render a good date (I emailed GE to no effect).

It a 12 cu ft, 2 door, top freezer, counter depth in turquoise. currently has a single bottom drawer in turquoise enameled metal, but who knows if that's original.

The model number is TB12Mxxxx, the serial number is HB 6213.

I think 1966 is in the ballpark for this fridge.  Definitely near the end of turquoise as a color option.

According to date charts I have I concur with speedqueen. May 1966. I don't remember ever seeing a 60s GE with that style handle. Maybe that more simple style was used on the less expensive manual defrost models?

I wouldn't be surprised if that is the original drawer in the bottom.

I think it's the original drawer, but the solid shelf that fits over it seems to be missing (unless it's an opaque glass that doesn't show up in the photo).

 

I agree that the handles were likely specific to less expensive manual freezer defrost models.

 

These are good refrigerators with true zero degree freezers, and they operate quietly.  Yours is the 1966 version of my 1957 that's the same size. 

 

The freezer is a cinch to defrost, particularly if you have a vintage electric defroster (a heating element with a cage around it)  to speed up the process.  Set it, forget it, and come back in about 45 minutes to an hour.  The drain in the bottom of the freezer routes melted frost down to the collection pan under the fridge.  Just remove any chunks of ice that have fallen or loosened, wipe out the cavity, re-stock the freezer and turn the fridge back on.  I'm usually done in less than an hour, and only about 15 minutes of that is hands-on.

1966 sounds good. Yes, its a manual defrost and she runs just fine. (I'm old enough that I am well acquainted with manually defrosting, although we always did it with a pan of hot water or a fan rather than a heater.)

Just today scored a 1961 NOS turquoise kitchen sink on Ebay, box stamped "General Electric" and marked turquoise green; I believe it was made to match the appliances.

Next, to paint the rusty sides of my 1961 Flair Custom Imperial with the turquoise paint I found to match the fridge...
