Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

That is a nice set. I see they used a kenmore top or top and cabinet assembly on the washer. I’ve got multiple direct drives with rusted tops that I kept thinking I would run across better ones to put on them but I haven’t. They are all fixing to be parts donors.

Melvin,

Good catch - I missed that detail.  Was there something about top/lid finish that tended to sacrifice the quality?  Did WP tend to use less porcelain and more paint during those years?

Similar to the one my aunt had many years ago, except hers was a 1999 model with the slightly newer console.

I’m not exactly sure what the reason was at this point. Sears still used porcelain tops on their 90 series during this timeframe. The ones I have are right at 20 years old so maybe by now it’s just an age thing. I’ve treated and painted them in the past but it doesn’t seem to last very long.

The 1962 Whirlpool we had was unusual in that it was an mid/lower model (Normal & Gentle two speed, Hot-Warm/Warm-Warm/Cold-Cold, Hi/Med/Low, Magic-Mix filter) with full porcelain top/lid and cabinet.  Model LJA32VW, the V indicating porcelain (Vitreous enamel).
