Hello Fellow Members.
I have a situation that occured yesterday with my dependable care Maytag dryer. For the last couple of weeks I have noticed when starting dryer it has been making a deep humming noise. Kind of like the motor is resisting to start a bit. Yesterday I did my usualy Sat wash and the noice was louder By the second load, I also noticed the motor was geting louder. I had stoped the dryer to check on the clothes, but when I went to go and restart the dryer it made the humming and then started to wind down and stopped. I did smell something like burnt wire and unplugged the machine right away.
The Dryer is only 9 years old and in great condition. I did call Maytag servcie and explained the issue I was having. The teck on line states it could be the motor and it would be around 146.99 to replace it, not to mention the 65.00 to come out to look at it and then the labor as well. Do you all think it is worth having the motor replaced (if that is the problem), or should I just go and buy a new dryer.

If you haven't put any money into it so far, I would buy a new dryer. Heating elements and belts usually go first, and Maytags are known to wear through blower wheels. If none of that hasn't happened yet, then it's best to replace it. Don't want to sound negative....hope this helps!!!!

If it's electric, I may say to replace the dryer, since the heat coil may not be far behind.
If it's gas, I'd definately recommend just replacing the motor. The same thing happend to our 1982 DependiCare dryer. The motor berings siezed back in 1994. We were able to keep the dryer all the way until 2001, when we finally replaced it with a Neptune dryer.

Thanks guys, your advise is greatly appreciated. I will more likely replace the dryer to match my neptune washer. I do not think that 300.00 is worth paying to have the dryer looked at and repaired. The dryer is electric and you both bring up a good point about the belt and heating coil being next. I would rather pay for a new dryer insted. you guys are the best.... Thanks
