Did you know.. The latest sunrise and earliest sunset are NOT of the shortest day?

Thought I'd pass this along as the days grow quite short and we are close to rebounding to longer days.  Based on Traverse City Mi the latest Sunrise is Jan 2 2015 but the earliest sunset was Dec. 9 2014.

I swear I was taught this in elementary school! Not the math, but the fact that sunrise times and sunset times were on 2 independent cycles and I remember a weather man saying something about the days getting longer but the sun setting earlier.

Years later whenever the topic would come up people would look at me like I was crazy......

I remember learning about the analemma, but never about the discrepancy in sunrise & sunset dates.

 

So I guess this discrepancy would be the same regarding the summer solstice?

 

Is it still (or was it ever) correct to say it's exactly half & half on the equinox?
