KDSS-21

Haven't seen one of these for a long time, this was completely Hobart designed and built. The control system could be troublesome, the neat thing about the KDSS_20 and KDSS-21 was that they used a mechanical timer like device to actually switch on and off all the parts of the machine, so the machine still made the neat clicktly-click noise as it was selecting and changing cycles. I may still have some control parts for the electronic 21s if someone wants to get this and play with it. As many of you may know I still have the only surviving KDSS-20 in my kitchen which I liked better because it gives two final rinses and it still has the non reversing motor.

My friend John still has one of these in his kitchen and claims it works fine.  I took a picture of it with my phone about a year ago to post here, but it came out horrible.

I thought I would take it from him if he ever decided to replace it, but have heard too many times that the electronics are problematic.

Gadgeted Glory

Pdub has one installed in his Portland home and it is a thing of beauty.  It still has a constant rinse and screened water filtration under the hydrosweep.  I tried valiently to buy his Maytag Jetclean which he is holding is reserve should the electronics fail on the Kitchenaid.  How about it old buddy?  If I buy the Kitchenaid parts from Combo will you trade them for the Maytag?  Always a horse trade going on somewhere in the appliance world.

Pdub and Hybrids?

Kelly, you say that Pdub has an electronic version in his home with a constant rinse and the stainless filter under the Hydrosweep? The Constant rinse as we all know ended with the 18 series and if I remember correctly, the first electronic models were the 20 series which would have had the filter like the 18 but not a constant rinse above. Maybe he moved everything over to the 18 tank which is possible as long as he changed the door which had the bi-metal rinse dispenser.

Also, the 20 had the uni-directional motor and drain solenoid so it would work easily with the electronics. But he would also have had to change the sensors which were low voltage equivalents of the 120v ones found on the standard machines.

He could have also put all the 21 components into the 18 tank to keep the constant rinse and do the same with the door and sensors.
I have done that many times but never got an electronic unit that had a working board in it and they have long since been obsoleted and when available, WP made them cost prohibitive anyway. My 18 series machine is really a 20 tank which is in pristine condition and also has the updated Hobart washarm that really works alot better than the way arm.

I defer to John to correct me on the electronic start dates and particulars of the electronics. Just going by memory.

I Stand or Fall Corrected

In response to Jon saying it was a Hobart I walked out on the gang plank with assumptions. I have friends with the nextnewer model with flat front control panel and electronics that dropped the constant rinse.  At the time I owned a Kitchenaid dishwasher I was not part of the group, but we had a Superba with push button controls that matched the style of this dishwasher.  It had the screen that needed to be cleaned and a constant rinse.  I would never challenge your expertise.  I have used pdub's machine and it has the voice of the earlier style Kitchenaids and looked cosmetically to share external similarities so again it was an attack of the assumptions.
