Because of Stacye's cerebral palsy, she has to wear AFO braces on both legs that reach up to roughly the knee. Consequently, she wears socks underneath them that are this length since the socks have to be pulled up to just above where the braces stop. For years she's worn plain black athletic socks. They've been great because they have a lot of stretch without too much of the annoying elastic at the top, so sock indentations on her legs have been minimal.

Many of them have developed holes since they are so old, so I thought well hell I'll just buy her some more, how hard can this be? Well apparently, really freaking hard. I've found knee high stockings, knee high socks in fun colors, decorated knee high socks, and the list goes on but not what I need. When I search specifically knee-high athletic socks, I get innundated with results of no-show socks. Like, no-show socks are what is basically out there it seems, or crew socks which still aren't quite long enough?

What happened to plain long cotton socks? Am I just not looking in the right place? I thought for sure places like Walmart and Target would have such a simple staple, but apparently not unless I'm just overlooking them.

I also looked at men's socks, because I actually think her old one's are men's. No luck there either, all no-show and crew in the athletic socks department everywhere I look.

Could someone point me in the right direction? In summary, I'm just looking for long, black athletic tube-style socks that can go comfortably under AFO braces, and if they could have minimal elastic at the top that would be a plus.

Thanks,

Ryne

Ryne, try Amazon. I did a search for black knee high tube socks. A lot came up, . They looked like they were plain black and the tops by the knee did not look like they had a lot of elastic. I was looking on my phone. Tomorrow morning I will look them up on my computer and see if they are what you described as you needed. Hope this helps you. I will try to copy the link for you.

Menards

Their website shows men's over the calf work socks in black. I bought some nice heavy winter socks there several weeks ago. Another place to try would be a store that sells work boots. They usually sell socks.

Don't know if these will help but Walmart has a good collection of knee high compression socks. They have the support through the entire sock with a minimum of elastic on the tops. No indents on the legs when wearing these. These are in the mens
line of socks online. Have worn these and they don't run down the legs.

If you have one near you...

...try Burlington Coat Factory. I've always had good luck finding standard black tube socks there. My stepfather used to buy black tube-length diabetic socks from (everything used to be a) Dollar Tree. Not sure what the prices are like for socks there now, but I remember that they held up decently - according to mom.

I like over the calf white tube socks and haven't seen any for a while, and you used to get them striped...

I have a few of those that aren't ripped and recently bought some Hanes that at least are halfway there...

Also I have socks that I thought would be nice to wear that are also mid-calf but they are not very comfortable so I actually put those in over my socks, wearing two, pairs which offer really great comfort for my feet... And even help reduce foot odor...

Most men's socks to me aren't very masculine--ankle-length? Bobby socks? Or those which never rise above the tops of your shoes?

No, I would never ever wear those...

Don't know if this would help

But I had luck with Burton snowboard socks that are thin, synthetic but have some wool in them and support my shins. Would these be long enough even though they are kind of dramatic?

I was also wondering if you wanted socks like Pete the Scoutmaster wears on Ghosts.

I found some Gold Toe over-the-calf men's athletic socks on Amazon. They came two days ago and she really likes them. They are thicker so her AFO's don't rub on her legs at all and since the socks are for men, they're wider at the top so don't dig into her legs. I bought two packs, so six pairs.
