Doctor, I have a KitchenAid Dishwasher that needs repair...

Hello All...

How is everyone? Sorry I haven't been around as of late.
My life consists mostly of work these days...

I need some help. I have a rebranded Kitchen Aid Dishwasher under the Kenmore Elite Name. It is about 8 or 9 years old. It's an Awesome Dishwasher with the Smart Wash options etc.
I like it better than my current KitchenAid at the new house actually... but I digress.

Well, last week, it stopped washing dishes...

1) System turns on and it fills.

2) After it fills, I hear motors spinning, but no water moving.

3) I opened it up to find that the water pump is not pushing water through either of the wash arms.

4) I hit cancel and the water does drain out of the Dishwasher.

So, I am assuming that the part that needs to be replaced is the Water Pump and Motor?

Is this a difficult repair?

Is it worth repairing from a Cost perspective for a new Dishwasher?

An easy Fix, I bet you!

Brant, you have a Tall Tub unit with the anemic horizontal pump, and are lucky it is still actually running without seizure or leakage.
These units for all their hype, have protectors inside the pump housing which prevent a lot of stuff from getting into the pump itself. If you remover the lower wash arm and the upper feed tube from the wash pump top, you can remove the 4 torx head screws which hold the fine mesh filter in place and get right down into the pump intake and check the protector screen.
It sounds like it is filled up and cannot let enough water pass into the pump and results in now spray from the wash arms.
I have a similar machine that was condemned by Sears and that was the problem for which the original owner gave up the machine. He wound up buying a power module pump machine from me and I took his old one away for him not knowing just what the problem was til I got it back to my house.
If you find you want to or have to actually replace the pump, I have a complete assembly that you can drop right into your machine that I am willing to sell for a reasonable price. Has the wash and drain pumps and pressure switch and sensor also.
Have a set of upper and lower racks as well in great condition too.
Check the sears parts site for a breakdown of your unit and you will see the parts I refer to above. It is part 9A on the breakdown of the pump assembly

Sorry for my delay in response, I've been busy with work the past few days plus we had the 4th of July Holiday!

So I am proud to announce, that I have performed my First MAJOR repair to a Dishwasher!

Thanks for the info! I did a little further reading and found out that the Garbage Disposer within the Dishwasher has a tendancy to grind itself. And when I pulled the Dishwasher out from under the counter, there was a small pile of metal dust, proving that the motor had ended up grinding itself, probably due to ball bearings... a common problem.

So I decided to order the Entire Sump kit for $200.00, instead of just the motor for $150.00. This way I didn't have to try to take off the impellar and run into other unexpected problems. Well, I tackled it on Friday, and ran a couple cycles for testing. No leaks and all functions!! Everything worked splendidly! I was and Am very proud of myself! I hope to get another 9 years out of it as the dishwasher is in excellent condition!
