i just got a vintage 1972 JC Penny Penncrest made by Panasonic Model 6521 stereo cassette deck of ebay. it work, but it has a problem the right channel puts out a loud ass hiss distorting the audio a bit. i cleaned and demagnetized the heads, but nothings happening. can it be bad caps? don't know, so can someone help me fix it. i'll appreciate it if someone can help me fix this thing. thank you and click my link below to see it in action.

Oxidized switches

Since the deck is mechanical, there will usually a large, long record/play switch (or sometimes two parallel to each other) soldered to the main PWB. The switch has many solder connections to the PWB. A rod or lever from the cassette mechanism trips these switches. These switches become oxidized over time and can create erratic distortion - frequently in one channel.
Also, check for oxidized cassette NORM/CRO2/METAL select switches or DOLBY select switches if so equipped.
CAPs are not usually the trouble but oxidation is.

Contact cleaner

Can be bought through the Radio Shack catalog, etc. I would suggest cleaning that monster of a switch, the pots., etc. alongside the mechanical and continuity checks mentioned above.

It is possible that there has been a component failure in one of the amplification stages, so if the above doesn't fix it, try swapping leads at the heads. If the problem switches to the 'left' channel, then it is head alignment or some closely associated mechanical problem.

If the hiss remains, before you start checking the amps, check the leads - they are awfully thin and, if damaged during installation, break over time.

If the above fails, try injecting signal at each stage, working back from the final stage. You will probably have three stages of active electronics involved: power amp, 'pre-amp' (volume control stage) and the first amp and equalization right after the heads. Again, anytime you can swap channels to check things out, do - faster and easier.

A wild card, but magnetic fields? Demagnetization?

contacts cleaned!
