Dual-Tumble Washes Again!!

The new tub drive pulley for my White-Westinghouse FL (1993 vintage...the washer that is) arrived today, and I promptly got to work installing it...took me a total of 15 minutes! The difference between the old one and this new one is absolutely amazing, even by comparing the two. The old pulley was long due for replacement; it was somewhat warped and the groove where it connects to the tub was wider than it should have been (that's aluminum for you...). Tightened (NOT overtightened) it down with the air impact wrench and it works perfectly...no knocking or "stress" sounds like it made before! It's almost near-silent during the wash and rinse!

Went through a few rags during the repair, so it was time to wash! Snapped a few pictures (forgot to take some during the rinse and spin) of what Ariel OxyBlue does in a front-loader (besides clean well). Even though towels & rags are notoriously "heavy" loads, it actually seemed well-balanced on spin with the new pulley. Well, one more machine back in operation again!

Also, I don't think it's obvious in the pictures, but small loads in this machine ride up the drum and drop at the 12-o'clock position, regardless of whether it's reverse-tumbling or not. Makes for some TREMENDOUS splashing and sloshing as well as interesting sounds...a video is definitely in order!

Glad you got it running nicely again.

Westinghouse, even after WCI, did yellow so well.

I think Maytag did copper the best, and of course Frigidaire did Turquoise (and who can forget Frigidaire Poppy?)

Dual tumble.

Very nice, enjoy. These are way cool. And at the time one of the few domestic F/L, I think.

I thought these revolve in one direction only, so I'm not following why called dual-tumble....

Steve, the last year or so of production, it did do reverse tumbling.

Austin-- thanks for the pics! Congrats on getting it working again. I had the Gibson version of this machine until '96 when I bought the first edition Frigidaire/Electrolux FL. I loved the tub light. Ah, those were the days---when Westy was THE playa in U.S. FL machines....

Glad you got your washer all together, and it is working great.
Did you by chance take pictures of her with her back off? I would love to see your washer vs. the potato pulley one that I have.
I would love to find a spacemate set like yours. I think that most people that have them, keep them.
Have you been able to clock the actual spin speed?

Love the machine! I'd give up my Frigidaires for a set of Westy Spacemates.
Am I correct in thinking that there's no detergent/bleach/softener dispenser? Isn't that kind of a pain for a FL?
And I've heard the term several times, but what the heck is a potato pulley?

Hi! Veg, I have a Gibson "Badge" W-Westy Washer and mine has a Buzzer to let you know when the Washer is at the Final Rinse, so you can put Fabric Softener in the Rinse. I do agree however that they would have been a whole lot better, if they had the Dispenser's. Even knowing that more Brand/Model's had Dispenser's before these were available, although some or most of them were Combo's.

I'm thinking that Austin's W-Westy does have the Buzzer as well, for the Fabric Softener reminder, which "BTW" is also an adjustable "End-Of-Cycle" Signal, on mine too. I've got the Matching W-Westy Gas Dryer, that also is Stackable.

Hi Veg & Steve,

Yes, my machine lacks a detergent/FS dispenser, and it is a bit inconvenient sometimes. However, it unlocks the door for a short period before the rinse and sounds a LOUD buzzer to alert the user to add the fabric softener (still doesn't make up for a dispenser though). Steve, is your Gibson one of the "silent-wash" Dual-Tumble machines or a "potato-pulley" model?

I haven't messed with the matching dryer (appears to be a bit older) yet; it's in pretty sad shape but I'll see what I can do with it. Looks like it would clean up nicely, however.

Hi! Austin, my Gibson is the "Silent-Wash" Dual-Tumble Wash Action, it looks pretty much like yours. In the first Photo of yours above, it looks like it is the Gold Color, but in the other Photo's on your Collection, it looks like it is Almond or White, which Color is it actually? My Set is Almond Color, with the same Black Console.

I did have a Match Set in Copper-Tone, before Westinghouse changed, with the "Potato-Pulley" and I sold them to a Friend at work. They moved and sold them to someone else and eventually in actually a short time {maybe 2 or 3 years} later, the first person I sold them too, told me they both broke down and instead of getting them checked out, they just got rid of them, without even seeing if I would want them back, oh well...
