Evidentally, the power is at least partially out on all the islands.

Power went out immediatly after the quake at 7:10 am. We just got it back now at 4:00.
Was standing by the washer this morning when I felt the solid concrete slab floor of the lanai first begin to thump, then I could feel it flex. The concrete block walls actually unduluted. It is so scary because there is no where to go. Mark and Martha called to say some things fell down in their house. Nothing fell at our place- our pictures were askew on the walls. The cats freaked out and I freaked out, but all is well here otherwise

That sounds a lot like our 2001 earthquake. I'm very glad everything turned out okay for you.
Earthquakes are frightening, but sort of exhilerating in a weird kind of way (as long as no one gets hurt, of course).

I heard that the electricity had actually gone into shutdown in anticipation of a possible tsumani (which thankfully, never materialized).
Are the islands that make up the state of Hawaii well prepared, in terms of disaster preparedness? Or does the terrain render this impossible?
