It was interesting to see the thread about the Ferguson TV factory as I had just finished watching the first episode of a new series called Electric Dreams where basically a family were transported back to 1970 - no modern technology at all!. As each day progressed they advanced one year, with an additional gadget.

I was a bit surprised that there was not a bit more coaching done, for example Mum put dry clothes in a twinne (HM 3174), and THEN BEGAN TO FILL IT WITH WATER. I mean, come on ....

The other thing that made me laugh was their team of technological "experts" struggling (and largely failing in my opinion) to get appropriate appliances. Obviously they did not look very far or they would have discovered the vast weath of knowledge that exists in this and other forums.

The link will show more, although I am not sure that non-Uk residents will be able to view the actual programme on the site. Next week (Tuesday) its the 1980s hopefully they will fare a bit better ....

I actually missed all but the last 10 minutes - thankfully Virgin have Iplayer .

Im sure every collector cringed at the Hoovermatic- someone really should have told the woman you cant fit the full load from an automatic in at once(and as you said you fill it then add the clothes!). I dont know where they got it from , but im sure if it was hired from a collector as these things are sometimes are im sure the electrical burning smell didnt go down very well!!!.

Id say the Baird was actually a late 60s set, although it didnt appear to be dual standard so may have been early 70s- defiantly not a 1976 model tho.

And id love the Creda cooker lol.........

Forgive a dumb Yank--

but this sounds like a variation on "1900 House," "Manor House," and "1940s House," (I LOVED "1940s House," the Hymers Family was wonderful...so much nicer than the Bowlers of "1900 House.")

Is it? Is this on BBC, or ITV? Or London Weekend Television?

You are quite right it is following in that sort of trend, although I would say that it was more like "1900s House" Lite, if you know what I mean. I must say I really liked the family from the 1900s house. This is a BBC production currently showing on the digital chanel BBC4 - this seems to be part of a technological strand they are running.

I would have loved to have done something like this (maybe the 1960s) but then of course I dont come with a "family unit". I would have loved a run in that Cortina 1600E as well, that in itself is a classic car - although any household with a car like that would have been far more likely to have a Keymatic or something like that, and maybe a dishwasher too .......

I was a bit surprised about how little the parents seemed to know about the old equipment, but I suppose its my age catching me out - I am in my early 50s - they appeared to be in their early 40s so perhaps "Mum" was not familiar with twinnies as they were rapidly dying out in their formative years. Although she appeared never to have seen a chest freezer before either .....

I would reckon that the TV was from the early 1970s rather than the mid 1970s when it was supposed to have been from, and certainly by that time we were seeing the first large scale sale of Japanise TV sets - some Sony, but more particularly in my memory Hitachi.

The Creda cooker was a bit off too - this model first went on sale in the mid 1970s - although with white grill and oven doors, the coloured doors came later on. A Tricity President would have been more like it or a Jackson Topline or Highline or a Belling Classic - oh now I have gone off into cooker fantasy land...... There are still quite a few of these cookers around though, and did you spot the Creda Autoclean (late 1960s) on ebay?

Recorded it and watched it earlier, wow that poor Hoover twinny, no wonder it was burning, that would been from A: the heater burning the clothes!!, B: the motor straining against the weight and volume of washing!!! there certainly wasnt enough water in it, and as said before, Water, Powder then Clothes!!!

I wonder how much was done for effect!! I to was surprised that Mom didnt know how to use it, given how long they have been around, heavens it is a 1957 model after all....and that you only have to look on youtube and flickr to see many Hoovermatics in use!!!

Also the Hoover Senior wasnt even touching the carpet...Ohhh theres milage in this as we have said all along!!

Al, yes all those cookers coming along, Creda with autoclean, the Tricity President with Rotisserie and the Creda range Cooker in the orange kitchen with Wighton like kitchen units!!!

Heres the rollover Mom should have had!!!

I seen the same programme on BBC Four aswell and was looking forward to seeing more things from the 70's and I thought it didn't seem very well thought out in the way of getting the gadgets in place.

Looking forawrd to seeing the 80's decade next week and all the things we couldnt afford when we were kids. I remember getting excited over getting a record player as a main gift for christmas and a black and white portable. Oh happy days lol and i am only 34
