It seems that old, "classic" Electrolux (USA) vacuum cleaners are now being manufactured under the AERUS name.

I'd love to know how much E. Sweden paid E. USA to "give it up"

I am surprised to see Electolux (Sweden) vacuum cleaners on sale in such places as Home Depot and Lowe's at ridiculously high prices. Even the Miele vacuums in general seem to be overpriced to me. Nice... but not all that impressive. Am I missing something?

IMHO I personally found Electtrolux (USA) had the best bags with the rubber seal and I liked the way the bags did not shift or move in the machine. In others (like Eureka, Hoover and Sears/Panasonic canisters, the bag can shift and the dirt ends up either in the canister itself, or being projected back into the room from the vacuum's rear-end.

Even scarier is that most people I have spoken to don't really realize that the new Electolux machines are not made by the same company they think it is.

I personlly hope that AERUS does not now "die" Even if Electrolux Sweden took over Electrolux USA and kept the old designs I would have been happy...

I hear Canada is much more into central vacuum systems than we are.... and that prices in Canada (and in US cities bordering Canada) are lower than ther are here. Any of our Canadian neighbors have any insights...

Central vacs

They are cheaper in Canada and very common. Pretty much any new home in the last 20 years or more came plumbed for a central vac and anyone doing a reno put one in. The lower price combined with the good exchange rate at 30 percent is certainly an incentive to cross over the bridge so I'd expect the retailers on the US side had to drop their prices. Prices in Canada on retail goods incl large appliances have dropped considerably over the last few years from what I've seen, or else they've climbed considerably in the US where now you can see a lot of the identical merchandise on either side with near the same price, making it a bonus if someone shops in Canada for that extra 25-30 percent off.
I've seen the same Phillips widescreen crt television at Walmart here in Calgary $699 Cdn...it's $799 US in Minot ND when I was there last year. It just depends on the item. I bought my mom a new B&D coffemaker for $19.99 Cdn ($14 USD) and a few days later we were in a Michigan Kmart and the same coffee maker was $29 USD..go figure.
