I see this genration on the scavengers trcuks al the time around here. I highly suspect that the centerpost bearings have finally given out because toward the end it was REALLY noisy during the spin. Rather than trying to rent or buy the tools required to replace the bearings, and tear the whole thing down AGAIN (If this were a collector machine, no big deal, but this is a daily use machine, so I'd be under pressure to get it done). I figured what I'd do is get a salvage machine, repair it, (usually a frozen pump) use my cabinet and controls, and replace EVERYTHING (baseplate, tubs, motor, gearcase, etc) by lifting (or dropping) it as a unit into my cabiniet by undoing the 3 suspension rods. I would then salvage all the known good parts from my mechanism and start over. Does that sound like a plan?

Sounds like a plan. I have done this on several machines. It is not very difficult. You should be able to do it in one day.

"BTW" I just remembered that this was my Washer and Dryer that I had hooked-up, when we had Lightening Hit our TV Antenna, but there wasn't any indication of Burning or Black Smokey areas on the Antenna, at another house we were living in. Thanks to Two of our Neighbor's that just happened to be able to see our Roof, from their houses, saw the Lightening Hit our Antenna and that helped us with our Claim. The Woman who came out from the Insurance Company, wasn't going to allow any Reimbursement, because of no indication as mentioned above. The Neighbor's Testafied that they in fact did see the Lightening Hit the Antenna. I had the Sears Tech come out to look at the Machines, for my Insurance Pay-Out for damages and he Estimated $500.00, but the Insurance would only give me $300.00 for everything Damaged, because it was a tough Lightening Case. The Lightening hit the Antenna, blew the Breaker to the Living Room and the 220-Volt to my Dryer, but before the Breaker's Blew, it Shorted Out both my Washer and Dryer's Circuit Boards. The Tech didn't actually detect both Boards on the Dryer or Washer, I forget which one for sure now, since this happened in November 1991, but anyway, I used the $300.00 to get the Parts for both Machines, except for not knowing at the time of needing the other Board. I replaced everything else including the Circuit Boards and the Start Control's on both, besides the End-Of-Cycle on the Dryer. The Dryer would start, but wouldn't stay on, so I thought about that it might be the other Circuit Board, so I bought that Board separately and they've been running like new ever since.When that had happened, I was "Heart-Broken" thinking that my Beautiful Washer and Dryer, that were operating like they were first bought, had gotten the "Crap" knocked out of them. I had never up to that time ever had any Repairs on either Machine. They haven't been operating for a while now, but I'll be glad to get them operating again real soon, after making sure that the Belt's are all right, or to replace them, as with the Hoses on the Washer. I will no doubt use the Turbine Oil on the Drum Rollers and the Belt Tension Pulley Shaft, just to make sure that they are going to turn freely enough as they should be of working properly.

I found that a little automotive wheel bearing grease works better on the drum support roller shafts than any kind of oil. Doesn't get old and stiff, and is VERY heat resistant. Think of the conditions a car wheel bearing has to withstand and imagine how good the lubricant has to be.

Thank you for the suggestion about the Wheel Bearing Grease kenmore1978, but I've been using the Turbine-Oil for around 35-plus years, without any complaints from anyone. It was recommended by Sears Parts and a few other Parts Departments here where I live, because it doesn't break-down from Heat either. With at least when I'm going to someones place for Repairs, it seems like it is easier to transport, being a fairly small Plastic Squeezable Bottle, with the distribution Straw that is pulled out for its use. I believe that there is also another brand called Zoom-Spout or something like that, which as far as I know is just like other products, the same thing but with it's own Name put on the item.

turbine oil

I have a bottle of the turbine oil, too, and have used it where recommended (Agitator shaft seal) and where I couldn't get access to use actual grease (dryer idler wheel).

As usual, I think they've cheapend the drum roller supports. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember the insert in the drum support roller that rotates on the shaft used to be metal, now it's plastic, which is the main reason I decided to use a tougher lubricant than just a light oil.

I like those machines, I wonder if he would ship. Then my 92 DD's can have an "accident" ;-)
