Electronic Control Maytags

Hey Guys ~

I've always found the Maytag all digital machines from the late 80's and early 90's to be quite fascinating. I just ran across this stacked unit on eBay down in Florida (see link). I just assumed that the digital control machines came out after they went Orbital - but this machine appears to have been built with the Helical transmission, and it also seems to be sporting trim from a mid-eighties model as well. Anyone out there have any more info on these cool machines - maybe a brochure or ad? I've included a photo of the electronic control machine that is at the Jasper County Museum. Too bad I never opened the lid when I was there! I'll make sure to do some more investigative work on my next visit.

#3 - this must have been one heck of a TOL stacked unit - look at the excessive use of chrome! When was the last time you saw a Maytag washer with a chrome handle!

I've used one of these before.

They are helical drive machines. Very shallow tub though. Probably about a 10 lb. capacity. The lid slides back underneath the dryer and there is a lighted tub. If I had to have a stacked laundry unit, this would have been my choice. Very nice looking I think!

The electronic control was available on the stack units before they had it on the regular model. The S1000 was introduced somewhere in the mid 1980's so the early ones had the old transmission. Electronic control was the only option on Maytag stacks for some time. The first regular electronic model was (I believe) in 1990. When the black panels where introduced. Then switched to white panels for 1994. And where dropped in late 1996 when Dependable Care 97 was introduced. This was the start of the more slanted/ rounded control panel.

I have the brochures around here for the first stacks and the first full size black-panel machines, I'll try to scan them in the next few days, I'm on Skyler's IMac so don't have access to the scanner right now.

A friend of mine had the slow-stroke tranny washer with the knob-controls, I helped install it. The standard capacity washer was paired with a smaller-version of the "Big Load" dryer format. Very nice units and I believe pretty reliable as well. Another client of mine had one with electronic controls that was a sweet machine, I loved the pauses and different cycle-controls compared with the standard timer washers.
