Energy Star Range

I've noticed they're now labeling select ranges "Energy Star"

 

What does that mean exactly? How do these differ from previous none energy star labelled ranges? What changed?

The only thing that I’m aware of changing on the newer coil top electric stoves are the burner elements. They all have safety buttons in the center of the elements that will only turn on if a pan is on the burner. This is to prevent fires from someone leaving a burner on without a pan on the burner.

I believe that these elements can be replaced with conventional elements that don’t have these safety buttons. But I believe this will also void the warranty, plus it would cost at least $60 to $70 to purchase the replacement elements.

Eddie, I don't mind voiding the warranty. Sensi temp is not just a nonsense requirement, but the UL standards mandating it are totally corrupt to the core. No longer does with have anything to do with safety, its about making profit off litigation. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is being regulated out of existence.

 

 

Do you know which grandfathered burners will fit in place of the sensi temp burners?

If the element plugs are the same as the plugs on the Sensi-Temp elements and the wattage is the same then you should be good to go. But I’m not a tech, I imagine that John will have some thoughts on this work around.

Exposed coil elements with safety sensors

These are thermostats that are mounted in the center of a burner wired in series with the element they are designed to control excess temperatures of over 500°. They start to cycle the element off if somebody leaves the element on high and tries to use it with a badly warped pan or no pan at all on the burner.

The element will heat just fine with no pan on it unless you leave it on the high setting where it gets red hot.

These elements can be easily replaced with older elements. They just plug right in, to be sure to notify your homeowners insurance company if you decide to modify the range , they might be interested in knowing that you’re facing an increased risk of a kitchen fire. If you had this new range and you had modified it, the insurance adjuster may see that you had modified the range and void your whole claim.
