Call me uninformed, but just what is Red Bull? I see them around, but I've never had one. Does 'energy drink' mean 'loaded with caffeine'? Does Red Bull taste like sodapop?

When I consume caffeine I become the guy who talks a hundred mph about 2 inches from your face and whose heart is seen pounding through his shirt, eye muscles twitching and temples pulsing.

So I avoid caffeine. Except for Coke. Gotta have a Coke every now and then. I love Coke. Coke with crushed ice and a slice of lemon. A lemon Coke. But really, what is Red Bull?

WHAT THE HELL IS RED BULL?!! Sorry, am I yelling?

Someone around here must have actually consumed one and can explain the following parameters to Frigilux, the beverage Luddite.

1) Taste: compare and contrast to other common-knowledge beverages

2) Tactile aspects: level of carbonation, thickness/thinness of texture, mouth-feel

3) Composition: what ingredients make it an "energy drink" as compared to, oh, say, Tang?

A thousand thank-you's to the person who can provide this info.

Luv,
Frigilux

Frigilux, hopefully someone will chime in with the exact taste, my Red Bull intake usually involves the assistance of Jager so I'm afraid I can't give a straight answer ; )

But, these drinks can end up being very bitter, very tart, or very sweet depending on brand. The magic ingredients are usually a mix of caffeine with Guarana, Taurine and Ginsing. I actually like the taste of the Tab energy drink above, though the other taste testers around here were not impressed.

I think you'll just have to buy a can of RB and try it for the full effect. Not as much energy boost as taste-shock I'd say.

I beleive the "energy" drinks such as that new "TAB" or "Jolt" are spiked with caffeine-Don't like these-although I have seen some people drink these during night or mid shifts to help keep them awake. They may have two-three times the caffeine as regular sodas. They can also "spike" your blood pressure. If you have high blood pressure-do not drink these.

Frigilux:

One of my pet peeves is the phrase "sodapop". My wife works for the Pepsi distributor here and they refer to beverages as either soda, pop, or carbonated beverage. Red Bull, No Fear and the rest are referred to as alternative energy drinks. Sorry to rant.

cadman-- The last time I had Jagermeister I was in Sacramento. I woke up 14 hours later with a gash on my head and a black eye. Evil, evil stuff, Jager is. It's like a trippy narcotic.

polkanut-- I don't usually use the term sodapop; I was just thinking of The Outsiders, I guess, LOL!

Red Bull: where I come from, we call that stuff "coder fuel."

Me, I don't do caffeine. Chocolate works great. Tastes good too!

I'm part geekette

Frig,

Coder is a term used for people who do "code". Ya know, writing the codes for software applications, and etc.. (IE: HTML scripting, writing web pages, the LONG way)

It is very time laboring, and intense. Anything with tons of caffeen in it would just be stimulating enough for the brain to react and help process writing out long --- strings of "code".

My scoop on Tab

As an avid energy drink/Red Bull fan, I had to try this, and when I saw it at the convenience store I promptly grabbed a can.

All I can say is EWWWWWWW. Definitely not energy drink material and is no match for the others, just like Tab was no match for Coke! Is very celery-tasting (reminded me of water from a plant stem) with no carbonation and VERY LITTLE fruity notes. Also lacks that "hyper-sweet" flavor that prevents you from guzzling one down too quickly, and that energy drinks are most famous for. My advice: SAVE YOUR $2 and go for a plain old Red Bull or the 16 oz. Rockstar energy drink which I like.

Red Bull Rules!

I've been drinking Red Bull for awhile now. I would take two Advil and drink a can before Tae Kwon Do classes. I don't particularly like the taste, but it ain't bad either. I was really hoping that the new Tab energy drink would be a replacement, but judging from what Westy said....FEH! If it's plant water ya want, drink out of the watering can! I'll keep my Red Bull, thank you.
