Estate Sale Find - Sunbeam Mixmaster 12C

Dragged the BF to an estate sale today in Chatham NJ. Lovely old house. I'd been looking for a classic stand mixer and when I saw this one, I made an offer. Its missing one of the beaters and only has 2 small bowls, but for $5 I couldn't pass it up.

I'd love to find a larger bowl for this, and of course an additional beater. And any advice of course! I'm really looking forward to using it.

Great buy, don't forget the sewing machine oil. How does it sound?

Oh, good call, will have to get some sewing machine oil. I am guessing 3in1 isn't ideal? Also need to pick up a new tube of Simichrome.

It sounds pretty smooth so far, not laboring at all.

I bought a pink model 12 on ebay a few years ago and sent it to the Sunbeam authorized service center in Columbia, SC for cleaning, etc.

At least one of the guys there was as enthused about mixers as we are about washers and he was tickled to work on it. He said it has sucked in about three tablespoons of flour, which he cleaned out. He re-oiled everythin, cleaned the whole machine, and tuned up the "points" I believe he called them in the speed dial. Last I heard, new beaters were still available for it.

If you like this mixer, just be aware that you can still get them professionally serviced should you ever want to do that.

I managed to polish it up a bit tonight and she gleams. Looks wonderful on my countertop, especially with my metal backsplash tiles.

How many years ago was it that you took it to a authorized Sunbeam Service Centre or was it a repair place authorized to repair all different brnads... even they are becoming scarce

For the Compleat All-Chrome Experience, you might try looking for a set of the stainless Mixmaster bowls. They do fit that model AFAIK (Kelly will know if there are any caveats or exceptions), and they really make a chrome Mixmaster gleam. Non-breakable, too, which is a big consideration for those who are, like me, butter-fingered.

On the other hand, you may prefer the glass ones, in which case I'll hush.

Maybe I'll try for both the metal and glass bowls, and display the machine with the stainless bowl.

Eric, I also reccomend the Stainless bowls.
You can easily find them on ebay.
I switched over to these after I had 2 FireKing bowls for my mixmaster split in half in the dishwasher, plus I think the stainless looks better on my 12C than the clear glass did

Eric, I also have a set of beaters that will fit this mixer. Pretty sure I have the clear juicer bowl hidden somewhere in the 'museum' part of the garage if you are interested!
I have a couple like this in my collection; they are wonderful machines!!

It was probably 6 years ago that I had this service done, so perhaps I shouldn't be talking about it here, as Petek is right - the shop may not be there any longer, but at the time it came up as a warranty/service center for my original model 2360 that I'd bought new a few years earlier. When it needed work, I bought the model 12, then sent both to the repair center. I think I paid about $100 for for both units, but am not completely certain. I think the 12's was about half that or just under.

I accidentally shattered the 2360's large bowl making cookies this holiday season. When I did a search for 'Sunbeam Mixmaster bowls' online, www.householdappliance.com came up that had replacement bowls in glass for some models, and the stainless bowl for most models including the 12. I am not particular happy with this glass bowl though it says online at the site that it's an OEM bowl. It's about a generic as one can get and made in China (naturally). I almost sent it back.

I would not hesitate though to get the new stainless bowl - it would look particularly handsome un-scratched, etc.

Broken bowls.. don't despair, Mixmaster bowls are one of the most common items in nearly every thrift store I've ever been in. As well as other brands like Hamilton Beach bowls, Westys and GE's a little less common but they are definitely out there.. funny more bowls show up than the actual machines.

The most common item in every thrift store in N.America is the red West Bend electric Wok btw

Wow, okay. I'll check around and see what I can come up with, as far as service goes. David was kind enough to send me a glass bowl which is on its way, and Sam says he has a pair of beaters for me. I like the idea of the glass bowl, personally, and I'll probably use it most, though I am giving some thought to a nice steel bowl for display. Something I'll sort out once I get all the parts together and give the machine a good workout, and see what her state is.

Paul, if you have a spare juicer, I'd certainly be interested!

As for oiling, should I use a specific sewing machine oil or is any general purpose oil okay? Where does one oil this beast, anyway?

I'll dig that juicer out on the weekend!

Oh and for the oiling, you should see two holes on top case of the motor. IIRC Sunbeam also recommended putting a drop right down the juicer shaft, too. I am pretty sure that 'How To Get The Most Out Of Your Mixmaster' for the model twelve has exact instructions on oiling - if you don't mind waiting until next week, I could scan that page (or pages) and email them to you.

Eric, here is the original sheet showing where and how much oil to put in the Model 12 Mixmaster. I did do some digging for the juicer bowl on the weekend but failed to locate it! I will try again this coming weekend. Sorry about that!!

Still digging for the juicer...

I went through three boxes of mixer bowls and parts and failed to locate the clear juicer bowl. I KNOW it's in that garage somewhere and will keep looking... Sorry!!
