Who has a carpet 'steam' cleaner?  I am considering purchasing a rug doctor which can be had for around 450.  Is it worth the extra expense over a pro-heat or eureka?  Having Stanley Steamer come out for a single visit is about 400.00 so the RD sounds like a good deal to me.

We have the mid priced Pro Heat 2 and it does a great job. We like how easy it is to use and to clean after doing the carpet. We always buy the Bissell brand to use to clean with but do add a scoop of the oxi clean (think Dollar Tree brand) to the water in the tank.

RUG DOCTOR!

Have heard such good things about them. My aunt and neighbor have the pro heat. One of theirs works. The other broke. They run a professional carpet steamer company. They said the Bissell and hoover dont really clean as well as a rug doctor.

Once the hoover platinum carpet cleaner we have craps out AGAIN, its rug doctor time.

The best thing to do for you Malcolm is try a few out....buy them, try it out, and if you don't like it take it back and try another.....

Rug Doctor on the other hand you can rent for a trial, about 25.00 for a day

I have the Pro Heat 2 and like it, but if I had the option for a Rug Doctor I think I'd go for it.  My issue with the PH2 is the size of the tank, I have a lot of carpet and I'm frequently refilling it.  The plus fro the PH2 is the detergent injection that I don't belive the RD has.

Bissell

I know a few people that have invested in the Bissell Pro-Heat models.  Both report that they start off wonderful, but after being used a half a dozen times, the results become less impressive.

I have rented the Rug Doctor before and have always been pleased with the results.  I would love to be able to clean one or two rooms every month or so, but no have the hassle of transporting the machine to and from the store.  Plus, the five year warrantee on the Rug Doctor is a great bonus.

I have a Pro Heat on indefinite loan from a true friend who came to my rescue armed with a brand new one after my partner's stroke 15 months ago.  There were some huge and serious stains on our bedroom carpets that just sat for a couple of days while most of my time was being spent in the ICU.  The PH's inaugural run got them out, and it didn't take that long.

I've used it a couple of times since and would not consider any machine that didn't have on-board heat.

I had the Hoovers and the spin brushes really do a fantastic job. I use boiling hot water,HE laundry detergent and a touch of Clorox bleach (maybe 1/16 C).My carpet stays new looking and always smells fresh. You ask why I use HE? because it's a lot cheaper and does as well if not better than the shampoos made specifically for the machines. If you use regular laundry detergent,it makes too much suds and makes a mess.
