Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Well, at least the bearings from the machine in the video are accessible from the back. My Miele washer was only accessible from the top and the front and the bearings could not be replaced without removing the complete tub assembly (very heavy) from the cabinet. I had to give up my repair job and bought a new machine. I am still wondering how a Miele technician would have done this.

Apparently

Miele would remove the machine from the customer to their workshop, disconnect the hoses, suspension and electrics, and then lift the whole assembally out with a forklift :)

It sort've makes sense as to why it costs so much to do.

Inquired about bearing replacement for a Miele washer, as one intends to keep my vintage unit until the end of time, and the response from our Miele tech was that the process was VERY labour intensive and costs dear. Miele usually strongly encourages customers to replace the unit rather than replace bearings.

At least they don't go too often

At least Miele bearings seem to last the pace though. They tend not to need replacement.

A lot of the cheaper washers no longer have any means of replacing the bearings at all. It's a case of replacing the entire outer tub as it's all cast as a single piece. So, in those cases it's definitely a case of writing off the machine.

Miele certainly last...

I have no complaints. Until the bearings were gone my Miele washer has served me for almost 25 years without a single problem.

Key signs:

1) Noise as the drum rotates - turn it manually and if you hear any scrapes, groans, crunching sounds it's quite likely the bearings are gone. (you'll also hear these while the machine is washing)

2) As in that video, try to move the drum up/down at the edge (be careful not to press too hard on the edges of the rubber seal as you could dislodge it)
The drum should not move independently from the tub i.e. if it moves up/down independently from the outer tub, you've problems as it indicates the bearings/spider is gone.

You'd expect to hear a loud rattle while it's washing too though, particularly during distribute and spin.
