Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I use Soft Scrub on my sinks - even the ones that are already trashed by harsher scouring powders.

I also find Formula 109 useful for various hard surfaces that might be damaged by harsher preps.

Then there's Simple Green, which has dozens of uses.

I use borax when I clean showers, tubs, toilets. It helps to retard mold and bacterial growth (I believe the pink stains left in shower stalls around here are from Serratia marcesens, which the US Army sprayed liberally around the SF Bay Area in the 50's in an ill-advised germ warfare experiment).

Last but not least, TSP and STPP. I use both outside the laundry room. TSP is a great degreaser, and STPP is a more gentle cleaner that works good for porous surfaces. I've even tried adding STPP to bath water. In small amounts, it seems to make the bath more soothing.

Easy off Bam-Dame Edna

Hi Brisnat,
Be extremely careful with Easy-Off Bam as it's main cleaning agent is sulfamic acid!!,although I have not used it myself,I most likely would not use it for that reason as I posted here a few weeks ago, I was nearly choked out by a generic brand spray-on tile cleaner.
Matty,
I remember Dame Edna when she did the old Malleys Whirlpool commercials.
I guess you are a young fella and so most likely would not remember some of the old cheesy ads from the 1970's such as;
Mrs.Marsh and the Colgate ring of confidence and how the liqiud soaks through the chalk, or the Fab lady who whenever anyone praised Fab detergent the box she was conveniently carrying shook and shook and finally exploded in an avalanche of lemons or even the old Ajax laundry detergent lady who;s Ajax with it;s wonderful '"blue beads of bleach which get out any stain" and who's husband smugly declared himself foreman material.
Oh dear to be young again instead of 41!!
L.O.L. L.O.L. L.O.L.!!!!!!!!!
Cheers guys.
Steve.

Fantastik

I can not live without Fantastik. I use it for almost everything. I'm not happy that they changed the formula a year or so ago. When it was milder, it was safer to use on vintage finishes. Now it sometimes wants to take part of the finish off with the grease or whatever. But it's still the greatest, I just have to be a little more careful.

My big fat Greek......................

Dame Edna for Whirlpool? LOVE IT!

Eugene/ Frigilux:
Do you use the windex for aches and pains i.e. elbows?
(ducks and runs)

Jon, ditto on our moms (or mum if your from the UK). I just live in the house and try not to bite the hand that feeds me, but sometimes that's a little difficult.

But when I was free and living on my own. Windex, Fantastik, all the Clorox products (tub & tile, toilet cleaner, etc.), I had this cool Clorox mop that used a disposable Swiffer type head and you squeezed the trigger to dispense the fluid onto the floor (yeah, sounds like another activity). When was in the Amway biz, I did like LOC. It could get stains off really well. Also, I bought some stuff called "Upper Hand" which is just as good or maybe better. I cleaned my stove SHINY with that stuff. How come the "door to door" stuff always seems to work better than the store bought stuff? Or is that psycological.

Jason. I have also used Amway products. Their SA8 laundry detergent, dw detergent, and well... all of their other products are great. They cost more, but a little goes a long way. I also think you can get the SA8 with PHOSPHATES!!!!

I am a Shaklee distributor. Not that active in it, but their products are also ver good.

Their prices are ridiculous

Amway and Watkins products are way over priced IMOP! I'm not saying that their products aren't good it's just that their prices are ridiculous. As far as pricing goes, Watkins may be the worst of the two. From everything to detergents, and glass cleaner, ect. I recently threw out a Watkins catalog because their prices were making me sick!!! LOL

I really like Simple Green--cleans well, eco-friendly, great for delicate jobs. Other faves are:

Old Dutch Cleanser
Bissell aerosol foam window cleaner
Resolve Spot Magic
CopperGlo
Cameo aluminum polish

the blue dot wins

I strongly prefer Ajax cleanser to Comet, having tested them side-by-side more than once.Ajax cleaned better, and didn't leave powdery grit due to its easy rinse formula.Bar Keeper's Friend,Shaklee Basic H, and Sparkle window cleaner are also marvelous cleaners, and Mr.Clean Magic eraser is THE BOMB.

Got to try the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Keep hearing fantastic things about it. Another cleaning product that gets rave reviews, but a lot of people are complaining they can't find it anymore, is SpicnSpan pine cleaner.

Here's a quick vote for Bon Ami scrubbing cleanser, and for generic chlorine bleach.

For sensitive surfaces, warm water mixed with a bit of dish detergent, sprayed or soaked on and wiped off with a sponge.

The chlorine bleach of course gets used anywhere that sanitation is important, e.g. in the kitchen and WC.

BTW, the minerals used in Bon Ami used to contain thorium. Yes, that thorium, the radioactive stuff that can be refined and used in next-generation reactors to make electricity. Just think of all the potential gigawatt-hours that went down kitchen sinks....

Primer on elemental Flourine....

"Fluorine is the most reactive of all elements and no chemical substance is capable of freeing fluorine from any of its compounds. For this reason, fluorine does not occur free in nature and was extremely difficult for scientists to isolate".

Ok back to cleaners. Sorry to have gone off on a tangent and hijacked a thread.

:-)

My favorites

1)Maria- every other Thursday

In between,

-The Magic Eraser takes the little schmutz here n there off just about anything.

-Rubbing alcohol and lint free kitchen towels. Great for glass, countertops, bathroom fixtures. It's cheap, its "anti-bacterial" (the most over-used, unnecessary advertising ploy to date)and dries to a streak-free, odorless shine.

My list

Comet & ammonia...nice gas fumes (j/k--no ammonia)
Bleach...disenfects everything...
Pine-sol...for when I miss camping in the woods...
Murphy's Oil Soap...love the stuff
Bon Ami- it's ok, but doesn't clean my copper bottom pans very well
(Have used salt and lemon juice with better results)

The BESTEST window cleaner in the world, is
vinegar & water solution, and newspaper. It is the ONLY way to clean windows, etc. that doesn't leave steaks. Screw windex & papertowels. I don't care what their bottles say. They always streak!!!

How could I ever forget..............................

Ezi-Kleen! aerosol spray cleaner.
Does anyone else ever get really annoyed when companies stop making the products you really like?

*Products You (I) Really Like*

For me, it's shampoos. I find one I like, that works well for me, and 6 months later, it's either reformulated, or discontinued!

Textra. For Oily Hair Only. Silkience.

REAL Prell Concentrate, not this unpleasant imitation stuff.

I LOVE the scent of Clairol Herbal Essence (the 70s stuff, not the "When Harry Met Sally" stuff.) but it's only so-so on my hair.

Right now, I am using Head and Shoulders "Intensive Treatment" (in the solid blue bottle.) It's ok, but not great.

A few years ago, just for "shiggles and gits", I wrote a list of all the shampoos I could remember using, and I came up with about 20 brands, many gone the way of the Tyrannaosaurus Rex.

Lawrence/Maytagbear

I wasn't sure if Prell shampoo was still around. Singer Aretha Franklin stated in an article that Prell was her favorite brand of shampoo.

I have a stash of Crystal Vanish for toilets, love to pour some in the bowl and deodorize the bathroom air and then give the bowl a thorough scrubbing.

That smells good...

I like pine oil cleaners for the same reason. The way they deodorize the air while you clean.

Prell is still around, but it's fake stuff. Not made by P&G any more and it doesn't smell right.

I have a bottle of vintage Prell. Mmmmmmm. That's what clean hair smells like.

veg

hair today,gone tommorow

I have often lamented over shampoo reformulations or discontinuations, and could also count many, many examples of such.Who remembers Dimension shampoo in the triangular yellow bottle.First, they ruined it,then discontinued it.Or the original Faberge wheat germ oil and Honey extra body formula,or Protein 21, or Gee,Your Hair Smells Terrific,etc.,etc....

It's scandalous!!!

The way they change some of these classic products and act like people won't be able to tell the difference. They've done the same thing to some classic fragrances, too.

A lot of people, a lot of opinions

My favourites over here are :

1) Flash Spray with Bleach (can be used for kitchen or bathroom as it can be used to effectivly clean cookers and bath tubs)

2) Fairy Washing Up Liquid in origional scent or Apple (it tackles dirty dishes no problem as well as being useful for anything else such as spot cleaning carpets, work surfaces door frames etc)

3) Shake 'n' Vac fresh smelling powder that you lightly sprinkle over the carpet and leave for 10 minutes before vacuuming this leaves the room smelling sweet for a few hours

4) Shop Branded Bleach for cleaning sinks, toilets, hard floors and soaking whites in if ive run out of vanish in wash wash booster.

Thought id put an input, not many uk people have posted in here so I thought I would

Take Care,
