The other week when I went to Hanley, Stoke on Trent I popped into to City Library and Archives where on the 3rd floor is a local business archives office.
With intention to find out about local firm Creda based in Blythe Bridge I got some great newspaper articles and clippings featuring things I didnt even know or saw in one of the local newspapers "The Sentinel".
Wars with Warrington based New World (Cooker Manufacturers) over similar designs on built in ovens.
£3 million deals to produce Ceramic Hobs in 1995
1982 Saw Robots making Electric cookers. I figure these would be the Creda Starlight, Commodore, Carefree ranges???
Mostly High backed cookers as popular in the 70s / 80s I would imagine.
NOTES FROM SOME KIND OF MEETING???????
MICROWAVES
Creda will start production of 1000.000 Microwave ovens a year by mid 1985 with Hitachi at the Blythe Bridge plant.
Zanussi UK has signed an agrrement with Litton for joint manufactre of Microwaves at Peterlee whilst Toshiba will build a new plant at Plymouth.
The 3 plants will raise total UK cpapacity to 465.000 units / yr including the UKs only existing microwave oven plant run by Thorn EMI.
The UK market for Microwaves is expected to rise to 1.3mil units or UKL250 million units in 1985 vs 1984.
The essential component the Magentron wilpl be imported from japan.
WASHING MACHINES 1980
TI Creda UK will close its Walsall, England Automatic washing machine and electric fire plant with a loss of 480 jobs.
Production will be moved to another plant.
TI CREDA BLAMES THE CLOSURE on the strengthening pound AND SEVERE COMPETITION FROM IMPORTS!
ALthough Automatic washing machine imports accounted for 30% of the UK market from July/80 vs 43% in July/1979!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!!!!!
Funny how its now probably 30% Brit made vs 70% Imports.
There was also a lot and I mean a lot of clipping of not much interest to me about the Hotpoint take over but it was in relation to union deals and strikes along with reduced working weeks. etc etc.
Carl has these atricles which I photocopied due in the post anytime so if your lucky he might scan and post some if we ask him nicely, of course if you dont mind that is Carl?
Id do it myself but its a PITA at the min with using the library.
Cheers
