A friend was cleaning out his mom's house and gave me a Farberware coffee set. Everything is chrome, looks like from the Postwar times. The electric pot is stylized and fancy with a narrow spout and wooden handle and feet. It has a cloth-covered cord that detaches. It even came with an extra glass bubble for the top, where the coffee percolates visibly. There is also a carafe (I assume) that resembles the pot but is all chrome and smaller in size. Or maybe it's to brew tea? With it is a sugar bowl and creamer. Everything is beautiful outside, but the pot and carafe are discolored inside. I want to clean it but wonder what to use. I know the pot is non-immersible. I can't determine the material on the inside - the metal is a very narrow gauge, could it just be the reverse of the chrome outside? It's very dull. I'm sure it's not stainless or aluminum. The carafe is the same. The stem/basket/cover appear to be aluminum. I don't have access to a digital camera or scanner, sorry. Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to ruin it before I've even used it.

Dip-It

I've safely used the cleaner called Dip-It on all kinds of old perk and there has never been any discolouration. I must admit that it seems to work best where there is a heavy coffee build-up. Try using a small amount at first and you can then try again with a larger amount if the discolouration doesn't go away.

we have a farberware

and every month or so, I perk a pot of automatic dishwashing detergent. I put 3 to 4 tablespoons in the basket, fill the water 1/2 way up thru the basket, almost to the top and perk. then leave it to "soak" for an hour or so, rinse it out, then perk a pot of plain water to remove any soapy taste. It works great. I like dip it too, but this way, one less extra thing to buy. I have found the cheaper brand of dishwasher soap works better for this than anything with dawn or a powerball included.

Dogboy44 does it the same way I do.

I find dishwashing detergent to work the best BUT don't use it on anything aluminum. It will discolor it.

If you don't have use for the extra glass top then I would be interested in possibly purchasing it. I have a Farberware that is missing the top glass.

Rich,

e-mail my address on my profile with your address and I'll send it to you. Make sure it'll fit. I measured as carefully as I could: The aperture in the top is 1-1/8", the opening on the bottom of the bulb is 1", and there's a flange above it that measures 1-1/4" (it sits on the top with two molded bumps that fit into corresponding slots underneath). The bulb itself is 2" top to bottom. Hope this is what you need.

Back to my query. The carafe (if that's what it is) is non-heated, should I just boil some water with d/w detergent and let it sit in there?

I guess I can scour the aluminum workings with steel wool or copper cleaner? My friend has no idea when this was last used, it could be decades! Thanx.

Have to agree dishwasher detergent works great for me as well. I have found that the powdered Cascade with Bleach is fantastic for this purpose.
