Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support AutomaticWasher.org:

yes, it's a str8-vane activator. This set is from late 1978 to 1979. It's pretty much the exact set I bought April, 1978. The dryer is exact, except m8ine was electric. The only difference between my washer and this one is the Perm Press Cycle. Mine had the short-lived version that did the partial spin-drain (like a Maytag and Whirly products) and then erfilled with cold water. It agitated during cool-down rinse for 7 minutes!!! This one does a prolonged spin-spray rinse during the whole post-wash spin cycle, once the water level switch is reset. Very nice set!!! The only thing I didn't like about it was the dryer had no autodry control for low heat and Perm Press button was still high heat instead of medium, as was the case about two or 3 years later.

Bob, If you get a chance

could you talk about the GE cooldowns in more detail. I'd love to hear about them because I don't know much at all about GE PP cycles.

Thank You

Nice find, Lawrence.

Dryer Heat

Bob,

Those heat choices on the dryer were a carry-over from the earlier all-electric days. Both heating elements were the same wattage, so with one coil you got "low" heat, with both coild on you got "hi" heat, with neither on you got air. Later they varied the wattages of the two coils so you could get "low", "medium" and "hi" in addition to air. Even when the electric dryers were limited to 2 heats, they could have configured the gas models differently and offered another heat option, but that would have required unique consoles (not smart).

Extra Care

On Perm Press/cottons it addeed another 10 or 15 minutes of no heat tumble. On Polyester/Kbnits, added 5 to 7 minutes of no heat tumble. The cool down was about 10 minutes on both auto dry cycles, about 5 minutes on timed. When signal was pushed "on", the buzzer ran constantly for the last one or two minutes (I lived in an apartment so I couldn't sstand it buzzing that loud for not much more than 30 seconds). When extra care and signal were both turned on, that buzzer buzzed for almost 4minutes I do believe, constantly. My first house, the washer & dryer were in the garage, so that long buzzer was very appropriate then!!
