I'm ready to bail on Firefox.  The only reason I've been hesitating is because Pale Moon will require some work with regard to bookmarks, etc. and also appears not to offer a "back" button (not a huge issue, but still) so I haven't made it my default -- yet.

 

Still, I'm curious as to why Firefox finds it necessary to run five identical applications that seriously bog down my PC.  Is there any work-around for this?  I'm running Windows 10.

Have you tried ......

the browser called Opera? I have been using it now for about 3 years and love, love, love it. It gets updated regularly and has nice security features built right in. Add the extension called "Adblock" and enable all of its built-in filter lists. Give it a try.

I used to like Opera. It was fast, even on old hardware. But they changed technology. It's now (basically) related to Google Chrome. At one point, it seemed like it might have been marginally faster than Chromium (basically open source version of Google Chrome)...but nothing like it once was. The thing that finally made me decide to pull the plug on Opera was the sale of Opera to Chinese investors.
 
I've been using Pale Moon as a primary web browser for some time. It has worked reasonably well overall. It does not have 100% site compatibility, but it comes pretty close.
 
Well, I just installed Opera and the whirring really cranked up as soon as I came here. I checked task manager and it showed 8 Operas running.

I know this PC is on its last legs. It's 11 years old. I'm planning to replace it with a laptop. This thing was only supposed to be temporary, but I've been using it for a few years now. I don't know if the PC is to blame, though.

Pale Moon seems to behave normally per task manager. It might be my best bet. I'm sure there's a way to make the back button and other things display if I fumble my way through it. The Chinese investor thing is another reason to give Pale Moon another go.
 
I'm also using an old computer that's also probably about 11 years old. And the reason Pale Moon became my default is that it works the best overall for my older system.
 
Pale Moon seems to be the best option.  No high speed whirring when I use it, and no multiple presences either.  I uninstalled Opera.  Those giant red O's were unsightly.   I can't use the current version of g-mail though, because PM doesn't support it.  The retro version is fine with me.  Just mail and not so much BS.

 

I still can't figure out how to get the forward and back arrows to display in PM.  Any ideas?
 
Forward/Back

I googled the issue and found the solution.  Right click on the tool bar and then click on "customize" in the drop-down list.  Locate forward/back arrows and drag up to the tool bar.  Fixed!

Basically any and everything sent via their servers now falls under Oath's privacy rules, which means pretty much nothing.

All emails, their attachments and so forth are subject to being scanned and archived. Data collected from said emails can (and is) subject for sale to third parties for use in advertising and God only knows what other purposes. If you do not agree with this (and give consent) sooner or later your AOL, Verizon or Yahoo accounts will be closed.

Oh and there is more those same terms also are informing Yahoo and Verizon email customers they must forfeit all rights to class action/the courts and go with binding arbitration.
 
Opera & reply #3: Exactly. I'd used Opera since 3.x and stopped for exactly the same reasons. IMO its change after 12.10 was a classic case of throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

A large chunk of the original Norwegian developers have gotten together and released Vivaldi. Not as good as the old Opera but a damn sight better than the new. Worth a try.

AOL: If it works for you, why switch?

Old computers: I suggest switching to Linux. Remember the El Camino, a pick up on a Malibu chassis? Need a four door sedan? You can lift off the pick up body and slap the sedan on the same chassis. Except unlike a car you can do it yourself.

Unlike Windows, you can find Linux tech support written in plain, non-tech English.

Linux versions, called 'distros' (distributions) or 'flavors' catering to a range of specific interests, specifically including old computers and clueless newbie users like me. Duck or google "best linux distros for old computers" and wade through the hits until you find one written at the tech level you're comfortable with. If I can do it, anybody can:-)

New privacy rules: I could be wrong, but it seems like the new rules allow much more default invasion of privacy while simultaneously giving us a lot more power to opt out of all the invasion. BUT, the info for how to opt out of all the tracking and data slurping seem more thoroughly buried than it was. I haven't really started on that project yet...

Well . . .

I'm finding Pale Moon is having trouble rendering proper images.  I was searching for something on Home Depot's site and the display was FUBAR.  Literally.  Copy was overlaid and illegible.  No way to navigate through any of it.  Reloading didn't help.

 

This morning I pulled up my local Nextdoor board and the posts were all shadowed in grey.  I clicked to view previous replies to the top discussion and ended up with images of mason jars for sale.  Reloading didn't help.

 

Maybe I need to find an update for PM?  I suspect PM is lagging behind the latest MS update from last week, which created a similar overlay problem with my Windows Live Mail program, which also has copy scrunched together and on its side, blocking the status bar and other things.  I'm starting to think it's my PC that's unable to manage the weight of so many major updates to Windows 10.

 

So now I'm using Edge, and it seems to be the worst of the bunch for slowing things down.

 

I don't dare attempt a switch to Linux.  I know that's just asking for trouble and ending up in safe mode or down some other rabbit hole.
 
While Not Looking Forward To

Never the less it seems will have to find either a second browser and or make a switch away from IE11. So many changes of late for security and other reasons generating "you are using an outdated browser" message. That and or sites do not operate correctly.

Can only reply to CL listings by going to Kinkos and using either Chrome or Firefox.

Downloaded Chrome once a few years ago; and quickly got rid of the thing. Wasn't a fan of Google's tentacles weaving themselves into nearly every aspect of my computer.

Five Firefoxes ... presumably refers to multiple instances of firefox.exe in Task Manager.  I typically have four to six instances.  Firefox runs multiple processes to separate internal functions such as plug-ins, scripts, and media content, and even individual tabs, to help avoid one such process crashing or freezing from affecting all of it.  Security concerns may also be involved.

There are some references to some version/builds, including Quantum, purposely not recognizing adjustments on the "Content process limit" parameter.
 
Well, I went back to Firefox.  After Pale Moon couldn't cut it, I tried Edge.  That ended up running more instances than Firefox.

 

When I dump this PC and get a new laptop, I'm sure the multiple instances won't even matter.
