Top-of-the-line Maytag reverse rack dishwasher

This is the one we have in the museum. It’s a great example of this engineering mistake.

This one sure looks good on the outside but the seller listed it in fair condition so it might be pretty tired. Can’t tell without interior pictures. It might be a good parts donor, the one we have in the museum we took a bottom of the line Maytag from the same year that the one that didn’t even have a heating element, but the machine had only been used five times so we put the controls and wiring harness And everything on the basic unused dishwasher to get a decent one for the museum.

The basic model we got that it only been used five times was installed in a very nice guest Apartment one of our customers had, and when they remodeled their kitchen upstairs, they moved into the guest apartment and she used the thing twice and couldn’t believe that amount of noise it made and immediately went and bought top-of-the-line Kenmore dishwasher from Sears and had it installed, and I told her to save the old dishwasher because I wanted to use it as parts donor.

These reverse rack dishwashers are only at best about average in durability ( GE whirlpool and KitchenAid all beat them ) we only had a few customers over the years that actually liked them. They really didn’t hold much they were awkward to load and the amount of noise they made was just amazing because the pitch kept changing with the belt slippage.

Back when I was working at a Maytag dealer in the early 70s, both my bosses of course had WU 600 machines in their homes, Bob’s wife really loved the Maytag. She had never had a dishwasher before and her life and got used to it, Bill‘s wife who grew up in a more fluent World always had KitchenAid and never like the Maytag dishwasher. Both of the WU 600s were ones that were scrapped because Maytag was scrapping so many of the original machines and they fixed them up enough to use them. Both of them got replaced later on with the plastic standard tub jet clean Maytag dishwashers which they both loved compared to the reverse rack models.

Today, both couples are retired and both have whirlpool power clean machines still going.

Dan, do good appliances have to be Maytags, must all Maytag appliances be good and can any appliances be good appliances if they are not Maytags? What about the Maytag refrigeration and cooking products? Do you have any experience with them? The factories were bought by Maytag when the production lines were needing to be overhauled to produce updated & upgraded goods, but Maytag thought that they got a bargain. So what if the doors in the side-by-sides did not line up and other messy details?

I know that John worked for a Maytag sales and service dealer. I don't see his posting as unreasonable. He is relating product history. With what parts of it do you have issues? I hate to pry, but if you are going to recommend a psychologist to a member in front of the whole club, the recommendation should be based on evidence, don't you think?
Thank you.

"middle-age frustrated man"

You're nonstop ranting about Maytag in every Goddamn thread, on top of that, a thread posting a free machine and I'm the frustrated one?? Members are getting sick of you viscously ramming your opinion down the sites throat, stating it as fact whether it's Maytag related or not. That bullshit gets really old. You're a prime example of a bitter old man, it's even mentioned in the reviews of your own damn company.

"Do not use this company; John is an angry guy that is difficult to work with." Dec 5, 2013.

Chill the fuck out, grandpa, we are here to chat about appliances in a positive atmosphere. Appliances are inanimate objects, most people toss them in the trash, working or not, without giving it a second thought. Stop turning this site into perpetual hostile environment shrouded in negativity, it has chased off members over the years.

"Dan, do good appliances have to be Maytags"

Tom, show me where every appliance I have or ever owned is a Maytag. My KDS 18, 19, 20 dishwashers are Maytag? My minty TOL Ultra Wash dishwasher I purposely acquired in 2015 that I had for 5 years is a Maytag? The '81 Series 70 29" Kenmore gas dryer I used for decades is a Maytag? The 1963 Frigidaire Imperial washer I bought is a Maytag? My current point Voyager Kitchenaid dishwasher is a Maytag? The Whirlpool refrigerator I bought in 2018 that got left with the last house is a Maytag? The GE range I bought in 2003 is a Maytag? The Frigidaire range I replaced the GE with in 2019 was a Maytag?

I don't have or currently own a Newton Maytag dishwasher nor do I really care to in the future. The RR I owned had its positive and negative features but "average" reliability was NOT one of them. 23 years of service without a single repair in insanely hard water. John recently posted how these dishwashers are unreliable in another recent thread and other members jumped in, disagreed, and wrote the same reliable experiences I had. Everything in the 80's was noisy, so what? My 18, 19 and 20 KA's were far more noisy than my RR ever was. Heavy insulation wasn't popular at that time.

"What about the Maytag refrigeration and cooking products? Do you have any experience with them?"

Yes, parents bought a new Maytag top freezer/bottom ref in 1989. Ran flawlessly until 2001 when it started having issues with temps. The tech claimed the compressor was on its way out. May have been true or a misdiagnosis since he didn't bother hooking up the refrigerant gauges. Frost pattern DID NOT indicate a compressor issue. Never a single problem with it otherwise but seemed like a short life expectancy at the time (better than average today). It was probably a near if not BOL model...no ice or water dispenser. No experience with their ovens/ranges. Never cared one way or the other to own one. They got into that game...again (besides the Dutch oven era) in the 80's, not vintage/simple enough for my tastes.

"I know that John worked for a Maytag sales and service dealer. I don't see his posting as unreasonable. He is relating product history."

His views and opinions he states as facts are highly slanted and do not line up with others experiences, including my own. He hated his job at Maytag for one reason or another. He may have not gotten along with his coworkers/boss/upper management. It may have gone much deeper to the point and I'm willing to bet good money it had to do with his sexuality which was not very acceptable in the 1970's and may have been harassed about it....which was very common at the time. This is where the expertise of a phycologist comes into play. WAY too much hate and anger directed in that area which goes far deeper than appliances.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but when one constantly goes off the rails in a very belligerent manner, it becomes unacceptable. A member above posted his RR performed better than his Hobart KA dishwasher and had better loading. That was not my experience. However, I'm glad he was very happy with it. However, my RR was MOL and had no heater, thermal hold, or other goodies that came with TOL models. Perhaps his dishware was more compatible with its loading compared to mine. The member may have also had a lower end KA dishwasher that did not have the flexible upper rack and other goodies that came with the TOL models. Cleaning performance could have also been something simple like too cool water heater temps coupled with long runs to the dishwasher. Pre 19 series Hobart KA's need HOT (150F+) water piped into them with their short cycles and non heating/thermal temp holds.

John did not work at Maytag and he did not hate the people he worked with. We joined them for meals and service meetings/dinners and had great fun, but wow, you sure are pulling out the heavy duty psychological shit by going for the sexuality thing. I would rather have a friend like John than someone like you in my life and because of that I am not going to waste more time responding to you. Funny that your parents bought a Maytag refrigerator in 1989 when there were so many better known names in refrigeration. Was this more of your Maytag compulsion?

Like I said, I have no idea of the situation but flying off the wall every time the subject of Maytag or another appliance he doesn't care for in a thread is the sign of a serious mental condition.

NOBODY is forcing John to use a Maytag appliance.

NOBODY is forcing John to like a Maytag appliance.

People can use and enjoy whatever appliance they want. They DO NOT need Johns approval for either.

Poor poor frustrated, Dan

I have two very good long-term acquaintances. One is a psychologist. The other is a psychiatrist. Both have told me at various times. I’m one of the most sane people they know and the world would be in trouble if I needed psychological help.

You don’t know me and you’re the one that started calling names so I’m gonna call you a frustrated little dicked man that is afraid of people, afraid of cities, germ phobic, Trump supporter, who doesn’t care about other people or the planet.

At a recent gathering of AW people your name came up in the comments were not very positive, I won’t repeat them here.

You remind me of Ron DeSantis when he picked a fight with Disney World and we all know how that turned out he’s just gonna be a has been also.

Keep it up. I love a good cat fight. You’ve just had a nasty demeanor for years on this site, you make very negative comments any chance you get.

John

"that is afraid of people, afraid of cities"

I lived in the SF bay area for 35 years, moron. One doesn't survive in that atmosphere being afraid of people.

"germ phobic"

It's germophobic, illiterate fuck.

I live in the country with 2 dogs that sleep with me and have reign of all furniture in the house. Constantly handling dead squirrels, racoons, and other creatures they kill in the backyard. Handling dead mice and garter snakes my cats use to drag in (may they RIP). Where's the germaphobia, moron? This statement coming from the person who doesn't like to clean a "yucky filter" in a dishwasher?

"Trump supporter"

I'm political atheist, dumbass. Show me one post where I supported Trump?

"who doesn’t care about other people or the planet."

Yeah, I waste my free time helping others fix their machines here because I hate people. I'm on other forums, appliance and other hobby related sites, doing the same because I hate people. I spent YEARS wasting countless hours scouring the internet, posting vintage appliance ads from craigslist and Facebook Marketplace because I hate people. The archives here prove it, John. Rescuing, fixing, and reusing appliances that would otherwise get dumped is not caring about the planet in your looney toon brain.

"At a recent gathering of AW people your name came up in the comments were not very positive, I won’t repeat them here."

I don't give a shit what other people think of me, John. Nice try though.

Seek help.

and John continues

No one should be surprised at John's post. It doesn't matter if someone posts a machine they just found or purchased, John will denigrate it, if it is not one that he likes. This happens over and over, I feel sorry for people who are excited to share something with the others and John has to put his usual negative opinions out there, all too often embellished with his usual lies, and point out every bad thing about the appliance. So often the pattern reemerges when a member puts up an appliance for sale, they are eager to share it in hopes that one of our site members will be able to benefit. Then comes the barage if it is an appliance that John doesn't like.

If it is a brand he likes, of course, his remarks are glowing. If it is a brand he doesn't like out comes his childish negative remarks

John does have issues..first his posts are largely opinions, not facts but he presents them as facts. He cannot stand, absolutely cannot stand, praise of an appliance he doesn't like. He seems to think his opinion is indisputable, the ultimate opinion and everyone has to agree with him. Maytag Reverse Racks are one of John's frequent targets, as they get so much praise from our members, with many claiming they are the best dishwasher that was ever made.

The jealously that arises because of John's low emotional maturation level, and his inability to accept a differing opinion, results in a child-like tirade by John to the offender.

More and more people are standing up against John and his continual disrespect of others on this site. His apparent neurotic attachment to Whirlpool and his massive ego's desire to be the leader, the king, of this site is getting harder and harder for people to endure.

John appears to be getting worse. This is evidence by the fact he even admitted about talking to Robert about his "taking control" of this site when Robert relinquishes it. When I confronted him about this, he denied it, even though his exact words were etched in print. John seems to be moving away from reality more and more, he appears to even believes his own lies. I am concerned about the future of this site. It will cease to be as we know it if John takes control. It will become one massive propaganda piece for John, with his removal of those who do not think as he does.

This is a wonderful site, quite unique in concept and a place where we can come together share and support each other. When one member attempts takes to take control and continually force his opinions and lies on others, and denigrating all who disagree, then something needs to done.

We cannot have an individual with the emotional maturation level of a five year old controlling this site.

Let's work together and support each other and oppose those who utilize this site for the building of their ego and who gets pleasure out of hurting those who disagree with with him.

What concerns me is that Robert has allowed this to go on for nearly 2 decades. Under the forum rules is the following:

"Inflammatory posts or Personal Attacks: Public Forums: There will be no posts meant to offend or hurt any other member, in a manner which is offensive or inflammatory. This includes flaming or instigating arguments. Private Forum: Again, if the webmaster feels that a user is abusing the privilege of openness they will be warned and if they continue they will be banned."

Evidently, that rule does not apply to John. I would be livid and immediately banish any member who is destroying my forum.

Expert Appliance advice, and opinions

I have never seen two bigger babies that were so threatened by somebody that knows something they don’t either one of you guys have yet to point out anything that I have said which is factually wrong.

Both of you had to resort to name-calling because you weren’t winning your arguments and if you do it, I’ll give it back to you. No problem with that. I have Roberts blessing. Robert has never had any problem with my Appliance opinions And facts,, Nor do any of the other serious people on this site who don’t try to just remain Anonymous fools because their attacks don’t hold up to the light of day.

Keep it up boys.

John
