Fridge Water Reservoir

Hi,

I have an older GE refrigerator. I decided to not use the water dispenser about two years ago. I'm wondering if they get mildew and stuff in them after so many years? Any advice is appreciated. It's model TFX22RL J.

I am thinking I will shut it down. Should I bleed it after I shut if off? I did some emptying of the reservoir today.

I've recently done the same. I wouldn't be too concerned. It's kept cold.
Ours is a 2007 model Profile. The water valve was replaced once under warranty.
In late December it began leaking again, so I got a new one form Servall parts, installed it, and could not get it to stop leaking on the input line from the filter. The flare is integral on the pvc line. I tried teflon tape on the threads, and then also around the flare. No dice. So I removed the valve, and drained what water came out. They refunded me the cost for the new valve when I returned it.
GE is still sending me orders for filters via E-mail and regular mail.
We can live with out it. Our old fridge never leaked.
Some home insurers say fridge and dishwasher leaks are common claim causes.
Maybe chlorine in the water degrades the plastic parts?

I was able to replace the leaky pump about 8 years ago. This forum helped me do it.

I'm just wondering of one should use a water dispenser after the refrigerator is quite old. I tend to wonder if there's mildew in it. And now they say we could have lead in our fixtures,etc.. How is the copper tube the water sits in behind the fridge?

Mildew

I’ve never seen a visibly moldy water tank before. You can check it. It’s usually behind the crisper buckets

The "reservoirs" sold for refrigerators' water and ice dispensing systems are just coils of plastic tubing. I guess things so happen to them since they sometimes have to be replaced.
