Friederich CP Series "Chill" Models

I was wondering if anybody had any experience with these?
I read elsewhere a claim that these are very similar to the Panasonic models that Panasonic ceased marketing. I had heard that Panasonic were good A/C units.
I want to make the right decision on a circa 6000 btu unit.

The Frigidaire unit I have is FACO54K7A6, 5450 btus, about 10 yrs old (?). Bought used, used in a bedroom and it has been ok, but it seems to be struggling lately, plus the fan has a rattle that says maybe the bearing is on its way out. I have a 12k BTU unit downstairs, and the sheer cacophony it puts out has me wary of Frigidaire again.

Panasonic

Was once rated I believe the quietest A/C on the market.

I have a 8,000 Friedrich. It's not bad on the quiet level but it is made in China.

As we know... mostly everything built today isn't the same anymore.

Just Got One

I just bought a Friedrich 8,000 BTU. Look for the "G" in the model number, signifying this year's models.

Main reason that I got a Friedrich is that they were well-built ACs years ago, when we sold them in our store. No, they're not made in San Antonio anymore (China, of course), but they still have good features, including copper coils and a slide-out chassis for easy installation. The airflow is very quiet, on any of the 3 fan speeds. EER is 10.8, about the highest available. $25 rebate from Friedrich this month.

The price might be higher, but I think it's worth it. Best of all, I sold the Maytag AC that I had been using; I got $50 on Craigslist, for an AC that I cost me $100 a few years ago. It was a hot day, and I got 3 calls for the AC within a half-hour of my listing on CL.

BTW, the Maytag always sounded like a wind tunnel. Could not use it an watch TV at the same time.

Fred, I thought the same thing a few, too few, years ago when I got the last of the 8K units made in the USA. They have proved a sad reminder that they are not like the big huge Friedrich unit I had in my last house. One has already met an early death and the second one is beginning to make funny noises. I had thought that they would be 15 year units at least at over $400 each, but the one that we attempted to repair when the fan motor went had such deterioration of the aluminum fins that it was not worth installing the new motor. They were thin to begin with and were more like the stuff they used to wrap around gum this spring. The fan blades clogged with dirt because I did not realize in time that those flat white plastic filters were as good as nothing and the blades are so close together that cleaning them was almost impossible. The el cheapo Sharp I got at Costco for $189 is probably the Timex of AC units, but it has a much more open fan. I won't worry about servicing it either. If I get two or three years out of it, I will consider it a bargain. It just galls the hell out of me that all of these things are made in China and our greedy, short-sighted government cannot see the folly of letting our corporations not only send our wealth to a military foe, but also make us dependent on this foe for everything up to and including military hardware and software. The Russians said they would bury us. The Chinese see that it is easier to bankrupt us. Like in a game of Monopoly, when you run out of money, you are out of the game.
