Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Gone already

What a beautiful machine. Was this like the last of the Spin-Tube models? I'm guessing that because it has a detergent dispenser and a rinse dispenser, which weren't available on the early models.

The last hurrah of the spin tube dishwashers

This was the final model year for these interesting dishwashers, it was very clever to put the loading instructions inside the door because people just could not figure out how to load those machines in many cases we had customers with them that would put bowls and pans in the lower rack, facing downward, expecting them to be washed, lol

This is the same portable model that we have over at the museum, at some point, it will get built in the wall of dishwashers.

This one as Tom mentioned also has the constant rinse on the top of the tank which probably helped a lot with keeping particles from redepositing on the tops of things.

Overall, it was a clever and well-made dishwasher. This is probably the only dishwasher that even came close to the quality of a KitchenAid for construction quality, but ultimately it’s unconventional design doomed it and in 1965 FD introduced a more conventional dishwasher with a lower wash arm.

What a shame

So many innovative and well-wrought vintage appliance designs got scrapped mostly because customers had limited imagination, willingness to read the product literature (inspiration for the good idea of printing the loading instructions on the door) or simply they were great ideas whose time hadn't come. The Sensi-temp electic range units were a perfect example. Now, 50 years later, everybody and their uncles are buying "Slow-Cookers" when the Sensi-Temps were designed to do just that plus other useful functions.

I cite my own Parents who were smart people but didn't understand many of the great features of appliances they bought and never bothered to read the manuals, even after I did and tried to show them how they worked. I still think it's idiotic how many people couldn't deal with the Reverse-Rack dishwashers that were some of the best machines ever made.

I will be looking out for one of these remarkable Frigidaire portable dishwasher from now on. I hope one of our members snagged it. I'd love to see more pictures of it and I'm hoping it goes to a home that will appreciate it.

I"ve said it before and I'll say it again. There was a street in my subdivision with I think all the same builder(s) and every house had Frigieaire kitchens. These dishwashers were largely maligned when dealing with kids and drinking glass volume. Many times I heard the complaint running out of top rack space and bottomm rack not even half filled when needing to run the dishwasher. I'll give it one thing, they were some of the quietest dishwasher in their day, And every homeowner I personally knew were downright giddy when these things failed. They were replaced by either KitchenAid or Maytag dishwashers. [this post was last edited: 4/24/2025-15:53]

in 2000, John put an ad in Appliance Service News looking for Frigidaire Service manuals. A nice Frigidaire Dealer in Cleveland sold some to us. Later we met him and he told us how they got special permission for their kitchen remodeling business to be able to offer KitchenAid dishwashers to people wanting high end dishwashing machines.
