I've been having this ongoing issue with my newer Frigidaire top-loader (FFTW1001PW). It's around 8 years old and does a good job washing for the most part, but this is something that I just can't figure out.

The machine leaves behind a white, linty residue on many dark clothes that are washed, particularly T-shirts. I've been using the amount of detergent recommended for a full load (line 5 on Tide Free & Gentle). I also use the corresponding Downy fabric softener (filling the dispenser to the top) and turn the "fabric softener" option on for a deep, filled rinse (otherwise it's just doing spray rinses).

The frustrating thing about this is that once I dry these clothes in the matching dryer, the linty residue turns into unsightly gray stains.

It must have something to do with the poor wash performance. The clothes simply float on top, and there is no turnover whatsoever; the agitator simply rubs the clothes against each other. It doesn't seem to fully force the detergent through the load for proper cleaning. I can't see any suds during operation, and it doesn't matter if the water temperature is hot or warm. The washer takes a LONG time to run (a normal cycle runs for a little over an hour), likely due to this flaw.

Another thing I don't like is that the lid locks during the whole cycle. So I can't just start the machine, pour the detergent in and let it dissolve before adding the clothes, unlike old-school TLs. Instead, I have to pour the detergent in BEFORE adding laundry. And then I can start the machine and let it sense the water level for the load.

Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent this? I've taken some pics, including a couple of the machine in operation, paused, 5 minutes apart. I'm actually rerunning the washer without detergent, in cold water, and with "fabric softener" turned off to try and remedy this.

Not familiar with this washer so went to the video tape.

Issues you seem to be have are (or were) common enough with top loading washers that don't roll over wash well, if at all.

Compare rollover with this vintage KA washer to yours.

You want to have things pulled under and rolled over, not just being swatted about on top.

Have you tried diluting detergent with water before pouring into machine?

No, I have not tried diluting the detergent with water before pouring it in. I may just have to do that in the future.

That vintage KitchenAid really is something. The guy is right, that's how a TL washer should wash. Personally, I don't mind computerized appliances, but I enjoyed the time when washers were much simpler and actually allowed you to select the desired water level. This made me think of the Maytag Atlantis TL which was formerly used at my old house. However, it died in early 2013 and was then replaced by an LG FL with steam. That LG was robust, but I've always questioned its true washing performance, due to the fact that it used such little water.
