After 33 years my Frigidaire WIB 1-18 washer has started to leak.

WIth small loads, there is no leak. As progressively larger loads are washed, the leak gets worse. I cannot see where the leak is exactly, but it is from near the center of the tub. It drips straight down into a round metal panel in the center of the machine. With a large load, it may drip 2 oz. to 4 oz. of water.

I cannot find a parts diagram to begin to determine what is leaking.

Any ideas?

Parts are hard to find. Is there a source for what needs to be replaced?

I hate to give up on this washer.

if it is the main

tub seal that part is available still. i have a 1-18 in my frigidaire washer collection that i completely rebuilt and posted all pics of here about 3-4 years ago. i bought the main seal at partselect.com. that would be my guess as to what the leak is about. mine leaked bad when i got it. now it runs perfectly although i only use it about once a year!

you can search thru old posts for 1-18 posts and find lots of good info! i think i posted that part number for that seal several times on this site. part is about 40 bucks!

it involves pulling out the tub to get to it ofcourse but i had no previous history with a 1-18 and my rebuild went very smoothly! a service manual is available on the web at daves repair.com and i think it might be here too. not sure, haven't been on here in awhile but thought i did glimpse it once.

and i'm sure lots of others will have valuable info for you too here. good luck with it!

Sounds like it's time to take it apart and investigate.  It's possible that it could be the water bellows and it definetly sounds like it's time for a main seal.  You've come to the right place for help.  First things first, you need to decide whether or not you are willing to go through the effort to repair the machine because it will likely be a laborious process.  There are lots of tips and trick on this website to make it easier.  Like Pete said above in his post you should search the site for all the information you can find, review his post on this job because his explanations are thorough.  You should obtain a service manual and familiarize yourself with the machine before you start tearing into it.  I hope you'll decide to fix it because you certainly can't buy anything even close to it these days.  If you should need it I think I have a copy of the repair manual in .pdf format that I can email you.  Remember, we're here to help you, no question is a dumb question.

End of the Line

Thanks for the advice and encouragement.

However, I plan to junk the washer and dryer since I cannot be without a washer while I acquire the necessary parts and rebuild the machine.

Yes, by all means don't send it to the dump, if that's the only problem with it them I'm sure somone here would love to have it and repair it or if nothing else the parts from it.

thank you toploader

i pop in from time to time to see what's up!

i agree someone will take that 1-18! if i wasn't so busy with other stuff right now i would be interested but alas, the timing is bad! i eventually want to pick up a second 1-18 for parts if nothing else.
