Frigidare Affinity

Our '98 Frigidare FL has developed noisy bearings and the advice is to replace it. Research has led me to the Frig.Galaxy 2940ES as a replacement. Internet research indicates this model has a problem with retaining water (several ounces)in the bellows (door gasket) whichs to a smelly build up. Went to the local appliance store and sure enough, there are no drain holes in the bellows. The salesman directed me to a Frig Affinity 6000ES, saying it was new and it has the bellows drain holes. So far, I have been unable to find any comments whatsoever on this model.
What say you folks on the forum?

I have one of these machines. Bought it new in February. I absolutely love it. Regarding water in the bellows, I simply wipe it out after each washday is completed. I always have some sort of cleaning rag handy by the machine. I find if I wipe the glass thing on the door and then wipe out the bellows, that the machine never has any kind of odor. I leave it open to dry out inside. And I think using a hot wash with bleach at least once a week for the whites helps keep the mildew/mold problem at bay. I live in the desert where the air is dry anyway and I am sure that helps.

I have a Frigidaire FTF2140. I wipe the gasket at the end of a washday and leave the door ajar. I am in coastal Southern California with laundry area in the garage (typical for the region), where it can get quite hot during the day. One rationale for laundry in the garage is to keep the house cooler and eliminate the need for A/C. So far, no problems with mold buildup, even during a month of record-breaking heat in July. On a recent (May) trip to Germany, I noted that all the friends I visited left THEIR doors ajar as well--and these people know more about front loaders than most Americans.

The drain holes on this model are at 3 o'clock or 9 o'clock, but not at 6 o'clock where they should be. However, I've heard of water buildup problems even in fancier brands such as Maytag and Whirlpool.

PS...I might add that the performance of this machine has been excellent. It is probably the lowest-priced full-sized front loader on the US market. My pre-tax price, after rebates ($135) was $465. I took a five-year extended warranty on this machine. I know Frigidaire is now owned by Electrolux and they have so much experience with front loaders, etc., but better to pay $100 for the warranty than have to replace it in four years should something break and not be repairable.

Water extraction on maximum speed spin is great. Clothes are dry in 30-40 minutes.

I have a 2940 and although there is a little water left in the bellows I dont worry about it. If the door is not closed tightly the water will evaporate. Don't overdose on fabric softener (you dont need much in a FL) which is a REAL mold inducer and you should be fine. I remember my mom's slant front Westinghouse Laundromat always had water in the bellows after a cycle and there was never a problem. The Maytag Neptune mold problems have left everybody afraid of a little water. ALL washing machines, top and front load, have a little water left in them somewhere after a cycle.
