I SURELY hope I don't get in trouble for this. I just thought it was too funny not to share with you fine folks!

HA.

$3.56 here for regular and they were raising the price placard as I was filling up my tank. (Without a delivery in sight. Price gouging?....NO....)

Same wth my Saturn Pat, $30+ for a 3/4 tank 8+ gallons. It was, until recently, $20 or less.

Interstingly the Exxon on the coner (which usually has higher prices.. perhaps higher rent in a better location?) was offering it about $0.15 cheaper and he was sold out in record time. The guy in the middle of a nearby block was the higher price yesterday (but not usually) and had gasoline.

I see the craziness beginning....

How does that dirty little Spanish language ditty go?

Me gusta la gasolia,
da me mas gasolina.

I like gasoline, give me more gasoline.

I have a feeling a lot more SUVs are going to be "stolen" in the next few months. Now WHY would that happen?

Houston, we have a problem!

LMAO retromom, I NEVER use WTF, I'm a LOL kind of gal myself! ;-)
Bob, I gave up working in refineries about 5 yrs ago, too risky for the money, IMHO. (Worked Shell, Celanese, Lyondell, amoungst others) Would NEVER take a job in Texas City, because I already had heard thru rumours how dangerous all those plants are there, and old...god they are ancient) Well the BP explosion proved that "rumour".
I do not know how if EVER, this economy is ever going to recover from everything that has happened in the last 4 yrs. It's depressing, and I have been a victim of it myself.
Having been laid off (outsourced my entire dept. of 9 women...THANKS DAVE LESAR, you *&^%$%^) from Halliburton 2 yrs ago. I myself, cannot find a job making as much money as I made before. Now, with all the refugees from NO here...30,000+ and growing daily, I have more competition. Alot of the companies here are just offering these jobs, right out, when I am daily busting my ass looking for a decent job. I had to go to the SS office here in Pasadena 2 days ago, and had to stand in line 2 hours to get a replacement card. Many from LA were there getting the same thing...most did not even have an ID card...I heard so many stories while standing there, its overwhelming.
Yesterday, I was in another employment agency, interviewing and testing when a couple of women from NO walked in looking for work. Had no experience of anything to offer, the receptionist told them to go somewhere else, as basically put, we are looking for ppl who have SOME experience. We can not help you here. I felt bad for them. At least they had a vehicle to get around in. Those folks in the dome, who came in on all those buses, have nothing.
Keep Houston in your prayers, folks. This is not going to go away anytime soon, and I honestly don't see it getting any better, anytime soon.
Check for local gas prices in your area by going to www.houstongasprices.com
I believe there is a link there where you can surf to a site for your own area and check for lowest prices. Isn't always correct, because I have checked a 30 min previous post, immediately got in the truck to go and fill up, only to find the entire station out of gas. But it has helped me numerous times save money by going to some of the stations nearby, who had the lowest prices.
Well I see a small novel has ensued here, and I'm blabbering...
EVERYONE have a SAFE Labor Day Weekend!
God bless you all!
And keep counting your MANY blessings!
I'm in tears now....

Oopss, forgot to add one more thing...

I pray that another Hurricane does not come into the Gulf, and hit US anywhere near Galveston. We will really be screwed then!
We are long overdue a major cane ourselves. TS Allison, in 2001, doesn't count. That was our "100 year old flood".

OMG BTW.....

Carol:

I should have figured you bein' a Texas gal and all, that you were in da oil bidness too!

I worked for the Coastal Corporation (now El Paso Refining) forever (13 years). I was an operations coordinator and scheduled refined product (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, kero) on the Colonial Pipeline.

Even with my experience, I have NEVER seen prices like this! I can't really blame the oil companies. It was always a case of supply and demand; in fact we would crank out daily s&d reports to figure out what we needed to purchase or trade for. Right now, Colonial Pipeline (which travels from the Gulf Coast all the way up to the Northeast)is not operating at full capacity. There was even a portion of it shut down in the Louisiana area. This does two things...first product moving from Texas cannot get to points along the pipeline after Louisiana because of the shutdown resulting in temporary shortages. Secondly, the refineries before the point of shutdown or reduced capacity have excess barrels (and limited storage) that need to be delivered to customers. When the line is at a reduced capacity, Colonial allocates *linespace* to its customers. The more one ships (historically) the more line space is allocated to them.

Here's where it gets pesky...brokers and traders then make deals or time trades to sell or exchange those barrels for product along the Colonial pipeline. Of course, this is not without cost! What usually happens is that a shipload or bargeload of product is sold or exchanged at a Gulf Coast refinery (who can't ship the product into the Colonial pipeline). The trader or broker then purchases or exchanges the same quantity for delivery along the Colonial pipeline. Since these pipeline barrels are at a *premium* (high demand) right now, there is probably a huge price differential that is being paid for them. Once it gets to its destination, the marketers sell it to the *jobbers* who deliver it to the gas stations. There is a jack-up in price each time it passes hands, not to mention taxes, etc. Lord, I could go on forever.

My take on this situation (even prior to Katrina); the Chinese are stockpiling a SPR (which probably is under the whole dang country) to cripple the US economically (yes, the next cold war has already begun) and creating artifical demand. The Saudis are loving this because they get to make over $70/bbl for product that costs them $4/bbl to produce.

The US oil companies are at fault, not for these huge price increases, but for failing to plan for reduced supplies of crude (let's do a little more domestic drilling folks) and not increasing refinery capacity by way of new construction.

The American people (yes, me too) are to blame for our love of driving, air conditioning, bright lights, and everything else that sucks up energy and for failing to find reasonably-priced and practical alternative energy sources.

If you think the price of petroleum products has skyrocketed, check out prescription drugs. Funny how no one *disses* the pharmaceutical industry. They are the absolute most corrupt and greedy bunch I have ever seen. They have been getting rich off of the backs of the desparately ill for years.

And the opposition to more domestic oil drilling. I'm all for the environment, but I believe that more drilling CAN and SHOULD be accomplished but with VERY strict safeguards

Ain't I glad I have a Diesel Beetle?

48mpg. hello? VW sells diesel powered cars. I want to see a diesel hybrid. That would give the Prius a run for its money.

The diesel is $2.49 at Wal-Mart and Diamond Shamrock. Everywhere else is $2.99 and up.
