As I have mentioned in another thread, I have a very feeble electric supply here in Hungary so I can't run an electric cooker. When I was in the process of moving here I did look at a few used gas cookers but needed one that could be jetted for LPG gas. There is mains gas to the village but the gas is of poor calorific value, expensive and not 100% reliable, they have had gas cuts! The bottle gas here is propane - butane mix, unlike UK where you get either butane or propane. None of the cookers I saw had the jet kits available so I ended up pinching the caravan type stove from my 1976 Toyota Hiace camper.
The 36 year old Flavel stove works fine in most respects, although it is a bit of a pain having to light each of the 4 sides of the burners. I have looked for a new gas stove but can't find one with a grill, the concept of grilling food does not seem to exist in Hungary. As I do a lot of grilling I can't manage without a grill but I do have a small electric mini oven that can grill stuff. The Flavel also has a grill but it's a waste of time as it takes forever to cook anything.
I have 2 questions, one concerning the gas regulator and one about gas cooking generally (I have always used electric cookers in the past so don't have much experience with gas). I'm using the butane regulator that came with the stove as the left hand thread is the same as on the Hungarian gas bottles. Would the stove benefit from having the correct regulator for propane-butane mix?
Are gas grills generally inferior to electric grills? What bothers me is that flames always prefer to point upwards whereas for grilling you want to aim the heat downwards.
