This was the gentle agitator that lived inside or underneath the regular agitator in Hotpoint and Pencrest washers and was the driver for it. For washing very delicate and hand washable items, the outer agitator was pulled out and this was used on gentle speed. In the 50s, Norge offered the "Ripplet" for gentle washing. The regular agitator had to be removed and the Ripplet installed on the agitate shaft for gentle washing of blankets and such. I think it was made for single speed machines, but maybe not. The Norge agitator in that small tub was pretty vigorous and took up a lot of room. The Ripplet took up almost no room with its narrow shaft, flat skirt and a couple of bumps instead of fins so it would leave more room for a blanket to wash without having the agitator in contact with it.
