Originally released in 1949-50, This unit was a completely manual dishwasher, and you had to monitor its use. The owner had to turn the water on and off, switch from wash to drain and pop the lid for air drying. As GE's first attempt in producing a portable dishwasher, they needed economies in production to make the dishwasher more affordable. This explains the cheaper-to-build round tub. Plus GE thought the round design looked more like the ever popular GE wringer washer.
Advertised at $169.50 (about $2200 in 2024), these were built in Bridgeport, CT.
I noticed in photo #4 where the cord is being plugged in, that there is a separate ground wire attached to the screw of the receptacle's cover plate. That would provide a ground ONLY if the box was grounded, which would only be the case if metal conduit or a cable with a grounding conductor was used. The original wiring in my house (1952) was non-metallic cable, without any ground, as was used in most homes at that time.
