Anyone have a clue why GE went with the difficult to fix clutch system vs. a simple 2 speed motor?

I suspect it was because they wanted to keep both the Filter-Flo stream and drain volume at full force no matter what the speed of the washer activator or tub was moving.

That's one thing I was thinking too, Robert.
It just seems like so much engineering when they could have just installed a dedicated drain pump like most washers have today.
I also wonder if it was a matter of principle and trying make the entire machine operate off one motor. They did that kind of thing back then. Things like the main power plant or New York's central steam plant that was supposed to feed all buildings.
