I am hoping to get my place eventually and am looking at appliances so I will have some idea of what I want before I have to decide.
I was thinking of what type of fridge I'd like and I've always wanted a side by side with the dispensers.
Yesterday I looked at some at Sears just to get an idea of what's new. They had a pretty nice one, a white Kenmore for under $1000, it had the in door dispensers and nice LED lights inside. It even had a smooth front instead of textured that I liked and the door handles were even metal. The controls weren't digital, but knobs. I think it was made by Whirlpool as they looked nearly identical.
As far as side by sides though, my favorite has always been the Amana ones from the late 1980s or early 90s. I like the dispenser panel design and the angular door handles with the chrome trim. My neighbor used to have a white one from 1992 or 93. But as far as longevity and energy costs, would it be worth getting one that's that old if I could find one? And they would use R-22, it seems that Amana changed to a bit more rounded panel and door handles with less trim in 1994, which is when the R-134A came about. Am I correct in this?
I did look last weekend at Habitat Restore and they had two older ones, a Kenmore and a GE Profile. Both were a little worn though. I think the GE was $130 and the Kenmore was $220?
I may look at some used appliance stores and see what they have too.
Any insight would be appreciated.
