The country stations in Wash DC used to play the John Hartfords song about the "Old washing machine"
My dad's sister lived on a farm in Stafford Springs CT, she had a Maytag wringer washer with the gas engine. I have taken trips to the Amish country here in PA and Maytag built wringer washers for the Amish that had compressed air motors on them and Singer created sewing machines that ran on compressed air. THe Amish farms had either propane or gasoline powered air compressors that would supply the compressed air to the homes. The kitchen stoves and refrigeration were propane powered.

I'm guessing the new washer was a front loader because he said it looked like a television set.

I also thought the Amish could use hydraulic motors and gas powered pumps to run equipment.
