Interesting! I guess this means manufacturers of old-school agitator-based toploaders will just decrease the maximum water-fill of their machines a few more gallons to keep up with the FL'ers increasing efficiency. Apparantly that's all they have left in their bag of tricks to make their machines more efficient.

I read this article, very interesting things coming to the laundry room in the next year or so. Whirlpool will have some new models but the word is that they will continue to make the direct-drive top loading washers until 2012 by tweaking the water temps to meet '07 energy standards.

Has anyone had any experience with the LG steam washer? It looks a bit hoky and humid to me, but who knows? Those who own the LG machines seem to be happy with them.

The Electrolux Jetsystem........

Its amazing to us UK guys this is a new idea in the US!

It was introduced over here by Zanussi in approx 1987!!!.

At that time Jetsystem machines were AMAZINGLY efficient and used under half the water of any other Front loader!

Well actually there is absolutely nothing new about this system, it was invented and patented here in the USA first by Whirlpool and they starting using it in 1957. The water level does not come above the bottom of the wash cylinder. My 1958 Whirlpool Combo can do a huge wash load with only 15 gallons of water for the entire cycle of one wash and three rinses.

Read some where in an article on front loading washing machine design,that once water levels fall below a certian point, some sort of recirculation/spray system almost becomes mandatory to insure proper results.

LG Steam Washer:

Consumer Reports gave the unit's steam functions a good marks, but stated the unit was pricey for what one gets. If one does not like ironing,then it may be worth it,otherwise not much use. V-Zug has been making steam washers for years now. Mind you V-Zugs run on 220/240 power so the amount of steam and the speed in which it can be produced is greater than a 120V LG, IMHO.

Top loaders could easily use more water if they incorporated heaters and higher final spin speeds. However considering what the laundry appliance business has become, not many are willing to invest the R&D to bring such a product to market.

Mind you heaters have been top loading washers sold in the UK for ages. Frigidiare's washers had 1140 spin speeds, so it can be done.

I had one of the WP Combos they did a hell of a good wash job not too much in the spin dept however would love to see them rework it and bring it back .

Seamus, THAT WHIRLPOOL spray wash system will ALWAYS be the defacto standard as far as I'm concerned and all otehr attempts will be judged by me compared to the WP design.
