Okay, I am a movie buff. Will watch anything. And loyal to Clint Eastwood. But Gran Torino - Who wrote that dialogue? There was only one actor who could deliver lines, Barber Martin played by John Carroll Lynch. Really, the other performances seemed like total amateurs. The performances were so bad that my wife and I wondered if it was intentional - did Eastwood give work to a bunch of non actors and it is all tongue-in-cheek -- a spoof or something.
What am I missing?

Interesting, we thought it was a great movie...living here it was fun to see local sights, but I thought that the dialogue was great...spot on.

There's an interesting vibe here in SE Michigan where the UAW workers in the 60s and 70s brought up their kids and they've turned out exactly that way---self-absorbed twits.

My partner is youngest of 8 and the only one of his sibs (I think) that finished college...dad on the line at Chrysler, mom worked in a law office then CWA at Michigan Bell. Quite a big deal that his niece (his parents' granddaughter)just graduated college and started grad school in Chicago.

I looked at buying a house 2 years ago in Ferndale (first-ring suburb that's turned into the gayborhood). Anyway, it was an absolute period-piece of the middle class family-orientation of the UAW skilled trades...both husband and wife...beautifully furnished house, cool knotty pine bunk-house in the attic for the grandkids, very pretty in-ground pool in back...the love of family just oozed from the house, but it was really a period piece---people just don't live that way any more. Somewhat sad, in a way.
