green bag

hi launderess, the green bag i believe goes to a hoover model 66. The 66 convertible that i have has this bag. There is another version that does not have the long spring but attaches to the handle the way models 67,68, and 69 did. Some of the squarehood models like 1070 also attached to the handle via the spring latch. The bag that you show has the gold lettering and the holes spaced wider apart. This was hoover first slim bag. The model 66 was also what Hoover called the slim Silhouette. Of course hoover experts like Fred s. and Jeff Parker would know for sure.

Yep...

Hey Marty-

You're correct.. That bag is indeed for the model 66--I believe the earlier machines had the spring opposed to the "diving board." The "diving board" bag latch was used on the "A-line" (TOL) machines, and the actual spring was used on the "B-line" or "Special" (BOL) machines. And yes, the model 66 was the first to have the "Slim-Silhouette" bag. :)

Funny, growing up we had a Model 66 with the diving board spring, green with the gold letters on the slim bag and a condom bag holder. The handle was green on the bottom half, the clip was green, but the top half of the handle was white, which matched the base. The switch cover was green, with a black switch. Quite colorful, I bet quite the collector's item today. I pitched it years ago, along with our similar pink one, that had a wider condom bag, but a solid pink handle and red switch, and the spring had a pink shoelace type support within it. I wish I still had them, but I still think they are lousy as far as cleaning! My grandmother's old model 28 could far outclean them combined. Thank God I still have that one!

Gee Bobby....

you threw out a model 66 and a model 65? {insert bitch-slap here}
From the sounds of your 66, the upper handle had been replaced at some point, a problem that was common to the "diving board" bag latch. Because of the way that bag latch was fitted, this weakend the handle at that point, and they sometimes broke off.

I am still curious to know why you think the Convertible was/is such a bad cleaner too.

I know, I'm a Moron!

I didn't know how collectable these things would be 20 yrs ago. I would bet the white handle was original. I remember it being white forever. Any way to research the colors?

Colored handles

Bobby,
Its very possible that the white handle was original, but one that was half white/green would have been odd, especially at that point in Hoover history. Later on in the 60's and thru the 70's there are little oddball mismatches here and there that make some individual cleaners very collectible.
models 65, 66, 67, and 68 all had colored handles to match their bags/hoods. Model 69 was the first deluxe model with a white handle, model 32 the first special.
The "diving board" bag latch was introduced on the model 66 in 1958. When model 67 debuted in January of 1960, the 66 was pushed back in the line and lost its bag latch. They also changed the folding of the bag as well. 66's found today with springs instead of the diving board are 1960-61 models.
