Hey, does anyone have some comparison pics of a sunny yellow washer compared to a harvest model? And did Maytag ever go for sunny yellow? Just curious....

(BTW, that was a nice seafoam Whirlpool!)

Maytag did indeed do sunny yellow, and very nicely at that! Here is a link to the pic of Greg's Maytag sunny yellow combo. Robert had a sunny yellow Maytag toploader but I don't think he has it anymore.

I'm attaching a picture of another member's harvest gold Maytag set from the 70s.

I'm old enough to remember harvest gold in its original run and I'm still kind of burned out on it, because everyone had it, although frighteningly I'm not as repulsed by avocado green as I once was, LOL. I'm much more a member personally of the turquoise/sunny yellow/pink school than I am the harvest/coppertone/avocado school.

Stainless

I`m with you maytagbear! I think in 10yr all these stainless app`s are going to be out on the curb and no one will be picking them up. Give me colors!

Dr. Mitch, with the phobia so many people in the world seem to have these days about housework, you can bet there's going to come a time when people are going to get fed up with all those fingerprints and smears, and that SS stuff is going to be out as fast as it was in. Knowing how "retentive" I am about the house, it's not something I would even consider doing to myself! I'd be out of my mind inside a week! I fuss enough over the regular stuff!

Maytagbear, I do really like the stainless INterior in my dishwasher, as you mention! It's nice in laundry appliances when available too.

Colors & Stainless Steel

I agree that stainless is ugly & cold. I think it came from the "I have to have a restaurant grade/professional stove" craze. It looks cheezy. Not sure how it would have looked on old appliances- like 50's- 70's. Actually, it was on a few.
Next, they'll color it somehow.
Hmmm...how about metal flake on appliances? Candy apple metallic!- think of some car colors & there you go.
.... or solid teal, not turquoise. One color I'd like to see is cobalt blue, that would be cool.
And I can't stand all white on white either. Yuck...Jerry

What's wrong with Avocado green? It is my favorite vintage color. I mourned when my parents took it out of their house when I was in my early teens. They had a GE TOL dishwasher and drop-in range with the pushbutton burner controls. The house was built in 1968 (same as my current house) and was original to the house.

It breaks the heart. I know the builder who built my house in 1968. He showed me some pics from when it was new. It had green GM Frigidaires built into the kitchen. When I bought the house in 1998 it had (has) a GE drop-in (1998, newly installed to sell the house) and a Kenmore dishwasher(1995).

greg (gansky's) sunny yellow

Go look at Greg (gansky's) collection and look at his sunny yellow Maytag combo, its a BEAUTIFUL machine !!, I think the lighter, sunny yellow color is much prettier than the more "earth tonish" harvest gold. Just my "two cents"

Trivia note

Maytag's sunshine shade was marketed as "Castillian yellow."

BTW, I saw a picture of a '50s Magic Chef range in stainless with coral accents. I could definitely go for that, but the current "professional" stainless look is hideous. I don't care for white-on-white, and I care even less for beige-on-beige. Blech!

They may have had some special names for the later colors too. I know Avacado was "Spanish Avacado", can't remember the others off the top of my head. I had that brochure once, the one that comes up in the pic of the day sometimes, with the harvest gold 806 set and the woman in the picture. That had the later names in it, not sure what the earlier ones were.

Au Contraire!

Personally I like stainless steel for appliances, but not every appliance looks good in it. I especially like the titanium LG french door bottom freezer fridge at best buy. Not all stoves look good in it. Growing up, I always thought a stainless steel sink would look good in the kitchen wiht a nice disposal and a kitchen-aid brushed chrome (kind of the precursor to ss) superba. We had no dw and our sink was the cheap porcelain steel in coppertone. I always hated it. But contractors in those days were notorious for putting cheap fixtures in houses unless the house was custom built. So this is why I like stainless steel rather than colored enamel. But Iknow everyone has different tastes-I love turquiose and its derivatives and the yellows as well.
