HELP!! kds-18 sani heat

cycle is stopping at sani heat and I can hear the water heater kicking on and after about 30 secs it kicks back off then after a few mins will kick back on I checked the water temp and its only getting up to 150 degrees or so.....would this be a thermostat or thermal protector issue and are these even avail and where if so.....help help help!!

Try this first

It sounds very much like the thermal limiting tstat on the unit. If you jump it out, it should allow the sump heater to go to 180 and then advance the timer, The actual tstats are nla but may be available here and there like on ebay. The newer machines like the 19 and up did not heat to 180 and so if you get one of thse tstat assemblies, you will have to be satisfied with a lower sani temp.

The thermostats on your machine are held in by spring clips on the bracket so you don't need to remove the sensor in the tank and risk ripping the tiny o ring seal. If you could work from the left side of it, you won't have too hard a time of it.
IIRC, they were still showing these stats as "86 and 87" on the wiring diagram inside the door.

Neither is the correct thermostat

For the KDS-18. The 241708 is most likely for the KD-19/20 series as they had 2 separate thermostats and the 18 had 2 stats mounted on the same stem that went into the sump.
The second number you referenced is for the air dryer overheat protector.

I will look for the correct number when I get home, but if someone else has that information, please post it here.

If you are looking for brand new you may have to change over to the 3 in one style that the 22/23 series had but they will operate at lower sani temps as well but will include the 140 degree t-stat which you would not be using as well as the 160 sani stat and the hi limit protector. It can be done but you may need to change the slip on connectors and will have to determine which stat is which. there are tiny numbers printed on them to indicate temp limits. Also, the sani and 140 ones will be normally open and the hi limit is normally closed.

Jumping out your original one would mean connecting the two wires on the thermostat together, thus simulating the closed contacts in the thermostat. This should allow the sani heater to satisfy that thermostat and tell the timer it is now time to continue the sani cycle. That way you can isolate the problem to that thermostat.

If you have a donor unit, remove the thermostat that has the wires marked "87" on them and un-clipping it from the mounting bracket and exchange it with the one in the offending unit.

That is the thermal protector thermostat that is shutting down the machine at that point in the cycle.
Now that I have confused you, let us know how you make out.

i have a kds17a

donor machine if that would have the same tstat in it

Yes and no!

The hi-limit and sani heat thermostats on the 17 have the same basic temp specification, but will not fit on the sensor that the 18 comes with. It can be used..I have used them myself in a pinch, but the mounting of them is the problem. If you could mount them where they contact the wall of the sump,in a flat area, on the side or bottom of the sump then you will be on your way, but then what will you do with the 17?

I will check the part number out in a litlle while.. have to spend penitential time in the garags so I can check it out.

Part numbers for T'stats

Here are the original and whirlpool numbers for the thermostat you are looking for.
The hi limit, "87" thermostat was part number 116200 which subs over to 4161669
The sani heat "86" thermostat was part number 116199 which subs over to 4161668

Unfortunately, these are long since obsolete.

The Tri-stat I mentioned before which goes on the 22 and 23 series units is part number 4171092 which is also obsolete, but there are a few left on Ebay.
Like I mentioned, They have a 140 preheat thermostat, a 160 sani heat thermostat and a 180 hi-limit protector thermostat all mounted on one sensor that goes thru the sump. If you have no other choice, a 160 sani rinse is better than not getting any at all.
Since so many here like the 18's so much, I would venture to guess there are not too many who would give up those thermostats unless they have a few extras. In fact, I might even have a set!
Wait a few days if your heart is set on the exact ones and maybe John, Combo52 may have one lying around.
