Help with defrost

Hello all, I have what I think is a 1950s Fridgidaire refrigerator. There is one door and there is a small freezer compartment in the top right corner with a drip tray underneath. There is a "defrost" setting on the dial. My question is: how does the defrost setting differ from off? If I use the defrost setting do I still need to empty the entire fridge when defrosting or just the freezer compartment? Thanks for your help!

1950 Frigidaire, My parents started housekeeping with one just like it, The defrost position is basically a position that lets the compressor run just enough to keep food cool but let the frost melt, you turn to defrost at night and turn it back to the regular setting the next morning.
