I was looking at the Colgate/Palmolive Australian website last night just to have a look at Hurricane lemon liquid,(one of the few detergents I haven't used yet.),and noticed that as of August 31,Henkel have acquired the Australian laundry arm of Colgate-Palmolive.
I wonder if they will change any of the brands or formulas of the various brands, or even bring in new ones for we Aussies to try.

Before long all of our detergents will probably come from China anyway. When that happens god save us all.

It will be interesting to see what happens as a result of this. I'll be very happy if we do get a version of Persil on our shelves. Although people might not be too happy if old favourites like Dynamo and Cold Power go missing from the shelves.

This is Interesting

I was not expecting such a thing to happen.

What will be interesting is seeing which PLU's/items are kept, and which are consigned to the dustbin of the past. Of those that are kept, it will be interesting to see which direction Henkel is going to take them in the next few years.

If I remember correctly, I think its Omo here that supposedly replicates either Ariel or Persil. Its likely, however, that the formula in use is different, to reflect the fact that the majority of laundry in this country is done in (*SHRIEK!*) cold water.

What would be nice is having Europeans detergents more accessible, and reasonably priced. I am not sure if any are to be found in "boutique-stores" for those wishing to retain that of "The Mother Country," and whether it is even affordable(!)

Rapunzel I hear you

I currently buy my detergents from Germany and have them shipped out. Henkel will probably expand in dishwasher detergent as well with Somat.

I'm using Somat in my Miele dishwasher and it leaves Finish for dead, both the powder and the tabs.

@Mielerod

Interesting comment about the Somat detergent vs. Finish. Whats the water in your area like in terms of mineral content? (It seems Finish is the only holdout with Phosphates still present)

We've found that Finish leaves everything else for dead; aside from "Kwit" which I'm 99% certain is just a rebadged product.

OMO is made in NZ...where it is badged Persil.

Levers used to sell Persil in Oz, and I'm not sure why they changed the name to OMO in the 1960's.

Be great if we got some German detergent formulations. I won't miss Dynamo, Cold Power or basically anything else that CP make.

I buy the Finish Classic 2x Concentrate powder for the same reason. Other powders (those with the blue stuff mixed in with the white powder), leave blue sticky residue in my dishwasher and streaks on my dishes. Finish leaves them for dead. I usually buy mine from Costco and it is made in Korea. Nothing on the packaging hints at the presence or absence of phosphates. They are two two kilo bottles in a pack and I am pretty sure I pay less than $25. A lot less than what I would fork out at Woolies or Coles for a smaller bottle. I put less than a tea spoon in each detergent compartment and the dishes come out clean.

How much does it cost to have Somat shipped to Oz and at what quantities?

As for German detergents, I am not a great fan. I find that they are too heavily scented and every time I come back it takes several washes to get the smell out of my clothes.

Persil Ultimate/OMO Ultimate

This might be a tad off topic, but a few months back a friend went to NZ to look at the possibility of emigrating (which he has now done) but when he came back he came back with a box of Persil Ultimate front load, which I understand to be the same as OMO ultimate in Oz. Just wanna say that it's the best powder I've ever used. I use it on my beddding as it revives the colours so well, and I don't think my whites have ever been so white. I washed my apron and kitchen towels on a 30 mins quick wash at 40C and everything came out cleaner than what it would have with our SA omo auto on the quick cycle. And I just love the fresh fragrance. We don't have a similar fragrance on any of our local detergents.
So if any Oz or NZ members are planning a trip to Cape Town, SA, a box of Persil Ultimate or OMO ultimate would be much appreciated:)

Henkel

bought Dial Corp here a while back and is formulating here in the States. And they have introduced Persil as we've all been talking about this summer.

Henkel has what I think a good profile for a manufacturer, one that strives to produce good working products and make a dollar.

They were the first to bring out a synthetic detergent formulation, I think in the 1930's. So they have been in the market a long time.

I have found the German and US versions of Persil to be good working products. And if I recall correctly they manufacture Dixan now in the Netherlands. Louis sent some Dixan back in the 1940's I really liked it.

I first saw OMO in England back in the 1980's at an all JetAction laundromat in London. I really like the scent that the Oz Omo carries it is different.

@rapunzel

My only indications have been three things:

- Trying to pull up Finish MSDS' for the product. Most recently about 6-8 months ago, with a sheet labelled from about 2013 or 2014.
- The tablets still advertise the presence
- Most manufacturers make a song and dance about how "eco-friendly" their products supposedly are.

So, other than this anecdotal evidence - I have nothing. IIRC, I posted links to the MSDS at one point in the past, so I may pull up the post and paste in some links for everyone.

Somat vs Finish

Somat Gold still has phosphates in it, like Finish. Stiftung Warentest tested some phosphate free versions and the only one which matched Somat was Fit Power Tabs 12. Finish All in 1 Turbo Dry which has phosphates came in 3rd

Since using Somat, I find that the dishwasher filter stays cleaner and the stainless steel interior is shinier. I'm using a Miele G643Vi dishwasher.

Rapunzel, I have a mailbox which forwards my goods to AUS. Last time I bought a 3 kg bag of Somat for 5.99 euros along with other stuff. It states on the bag 120 loads. When I get stuff shipped I try to get a good mix of various items to make up the most effective weight to products ratio. From memory dividing the cost of freight with the items I bought, I think it was 4 euros per item. So that bag cost me $17 all up at the time and I bought it back in March and I'm still using it.

Thank you Rod,

I have, in the past, tried to order stuff from German websites, but always found that there was a problem either with their billing, dispatch or availability. Many companies won't send products to Oz. How do did you come by a German mailbox?

On Finish, the formulation that I use may be different to what was tested by Stiftung Warentest. I don't like pods and tablets, preferring to use powder in my machine's dispensers and Finish powder ticks all my boxes for performance. If you shop at Costco get a couple of bottles and make your own comparisons. They are very competitively priced. You wouldn't be wasting your money.

Wont miss Dynamo or Cold Power either

I agree with you Chris, I wont
miss Dynamo or Cold Power either, if Henkel decide to get rid of it, horrible, thick gluggy liquid goo.
I vaguely remember seeing an ad on youtube quite a while ago about a German detergent called Spee, I think, from memory it had a little racoon type character in it, maybe we will get that.
Like you I can't remember either why Lever and Kitchen changed the name Persil to OMO sometime in the 1960's either, would love to know why though.
For any interest out there Hurricane has a nice light lemon fragrance, not thick like the horrors mentioned above, haven't tried it yet though, got half a bottle of the new fragrant Surf to finish off yet.

Memo to Washer 111

Just noticed your post about boutique type stores selling "Mother Country' detergents, if you live in Sydney, there is a store in Skygarden, Pitt street called "Treats from home", and they sell British Persil, but it is quite pricey, the last time I saw, and it was quite a while ago, it was around $50 for a 3kg box.
