June Intelligent Oven

Retail price: $2,995.00

Introductory price until July 10 (reserve one now!): $1,495.00

Unit has weight sensors and a video camera to identify the food placed inside for automatic cooking. Dual-fan convection design. Phone app for remote monitoring.

There is some neatness there, although a lot may be over the top silliness.

The part that worries me is that they have just added a a thousand dollars of sensors, electronics and software onto a $199 junk toaster oven and priced it at $3000

Really seems if one were to want to go to the effort, it should be in a high end wall oven...

Just what this country needs ...

No Brains Cooking.

I know as a Chef that some people have trouble boiling water, but what ever happened to honing your skills ?

It just seems that technology is just giving people one more reason to abandon common sense and learning. Well, that was a stupid statement as you need to have the knowledge to use these high tech devices.

Will this turn into one of those "Crock Pot Counter Top Appliances" that once the romance is gone, they'll end up in a cupboard or on a shelf in the basement or garage collecting dust because it's easier to buy something premade ?

I think you hit the nail on the head.

In my opinion anyone who needs all this to properly prepare a meal will likely use it a few times and return it or put it away in favor of something premade.

Just saw a blurb abut the June oven on a CNET broadcast. The feature I'd like in an oven is the camera. It would be awesome to pull up the feed on phone/iPad and check on how food is doing. Sometimes I'll work in the yard or garage while bread is baking. How cool to be able to glance at the phone and see if the loaves have browned sufficiently, for instance.

However, as Phil noted, this sort of feature would be more useful in a full-size, regular range rather than a countertop oven.

Arguments of privacy aside, I do enjoy being able to check on or operate a device remotely on my iPad. I love being able to change the house temp or start the furnace fan when I'm getting ready to leave work. My schedule does not follow a pattern, so programmable features are of little use to me.

Running your oven or other cooking machine while not home is DANGEROUS--FIRE HAZARD!!!I only run cooking machines while I am at home.If the device has a camera that can be hacked-shut the device all the way off when not in use or cover the camera.

Internet Oven Privacy

Wow, didn't even occur to me, I'm glad my mind isn't wired to be paranoid in that way. Although I don't think I'd care if someone wanted to see if my fish sticks were browned right...

I do believe in proper online safety, but I have very little worry about it. I don't worry a lot about being hit by lightning either, but I am smart enough not to walk around with a lightening rod in my hand pointed to the sky!

Wait 'til the Chinese hack it and all it cooks is Chinese food no matter what you put into it. Like those old Chun King commercials, everything will be quick-cooked in dragon fire with just an orange flash visible through the window or camera.

agree with appnut...

I'll stick to my $250 Breville Smart Oven.

FYI, the Breville has been upgraded with a slow cook feature and is called "Smart Oven Plus" (by Williams-Sonoma). While my oven (3-4 years old) has a maximum cook time of two hours, the upgraded Breville can cook for 12 hours at low temperatures. May replace the use of smaller crock pots, though in terms of energy use, crock pots may have an edge. For big jobs, the oven simply cannot compete with the capacity of a crock pot.

The upgraded version is sold by Williams-Sonoma for $250. They also sell the original model in red for $250. Amazon sells what appears to be the old model for $245. Sometimes Williams-Sonoma is the sole vendor for exclusive introductions, and this may be one of those times, since Amazon does not appear to carry the Smart Oven Plus, but only the original version

Hrm...

Take the concept of the June oven and apply it to a 220v GE Advantium oven and add steam... Think of the possibilities. :-)

Could you imagine the bread you could bake with that thing?

.... I wanna be an appliance engineer .. :/
