Hobart Kitchen Aid D/W help please???

After the Frigidare spin tube kinda lost it, Dr. Bobby was kind enough to offer us this great looking KA d/w (thanks, Bobby!!).

It's a model KD-18, and it's having some leaking problems. The red arrow points to a 'bowl' at the bottom of the tub that's leaking (dripping) onto the white fan below it. It's also leaking from the plate that covers the filter screen. Rich took it off to clean the filter out, and tried re-seating the gasket. The gasket feels pliable, but the thought is that it's been compressed for too long.

We really want to try saving this great machine. We shopped for new ones, and it seems they're pretty disposible, AND the cycles run forever!

Anything you can add, Bobby???

BTW- the KD-18 is on the motor. Prob not the d/w model. It's all bungeed up w/ a tarp over it so I can't get to the door panel to check the plate.

Nothing like giving someone a gift that pees all over the kitchen floor! Sorry Rich and Chuck, I thought it worked perfectly. Anyway, it's a KDS-20 that leaks at the impeller shaft. The water comes down the shaft and gets sprayed around by the motor guard flywheel. Any thoughts on repair? I've never dealt with a leak in this place before. how much work and $$ does this entail? Is the seal still available?

Seal(is) the deal?

If the machine is only leaking from the shaft seal, it is no big deal and easy to replace. You can get the OEM part 4162139 from whirlpool or use a Hobart part number 435102. With the age of the machine we are looking at, a leaking shaft seal is not an unexpected occurrence at all.
Chances are that this is the only problem you will have with the unit. Do inspect the whole underside of it though as some had rust thru problems around the blower duct.

The tub is mint, not a speck of rust to be seen, even around the sump gasket. What does this seal fix entail? I can see where the assembly would simply snap out.

Thanks John and Steve both!!! As Bobby said, the machine is so good looking it's disgusting! I'd never have suspected leaking by looking at it. It does have an '80's look, but it is what it is, and I personally prefer functionality over form for a daily driver! Hence why we're hoping to abandon the thought of buying a new POS!

John, you KNOW we have to hire you now.... well, and feed you too, of course!!!

Another thing from my experience....

Are you running it with cold water or hot water?
I have learned this from experience. Esp. if the dishwasher has been sitting for awhile.
What I do now is actually pour in near boiling hot water and let it sit for awhile. Since doing this, I have never had a leak.
Before doing this, I would have them drip every time. I think the cold water causes the spin shaft seal ring to shrink a little.
Sounds like a nice KDS-18.

i have a few kitchenaid dishwashers

18 at last count, and whenever i get one the first thing i do is change the seal. it is not hard to do and will greatly extend the life of the motor. i would strongly suggest you not run it anymore until you have done this as a leaky seal can eventually destroy the motor bearings.

motors are actually still out there as well. i just bought one off the web for 30 bucks that will fit an 18-20 series so if worst came to worst i could probably help you out. but we won't go there yet.

once you take out the motor and pump assemmbly it is a very easy job to replace this seal. that way you can check everything else pump related as well. and the sump can be completely inspected for any developing rust problems. i would use a little 3 in one MOTOR OIL on those motor bearings while i have the motor off as well. you can get it at any hardware store.

once you get started there are many people here, including myself who can help you with this pump rebuild if you need it. and i have a lot of parts if you need something. you can e mail me direct if you like.

once that pump is rebuilt that machine will perform flawlessly for years to come! i have a kdi-18 i just picked up myself that i have to start on in the next week or so. it shows evidence of the same leakage problem.
