Not that it is Friday the 13th or anything, here it goes......I came home after being gone for 12 hours, pretty normal for me.I heard the dishwasher still going.I had started it before I left, and figured that it would be done, I could unload it, go to bed.The strange thing is that all the lights on the front were dark;the motor was running, like it does before it goes to fill, after it drains, etc. I walked over to it;opened the door, re-selected my program, and now it seems fine. It has never done this before. It is the long program, " Pots and Pans, soak and scrub" Or I will use the Santi cycle, maybe even Heavy wash, to kind of mix things up a bit. Is there something a mis with my Kitchen-Aid? Or is it a fluke? My dishwasher is old but good, the guy had it in his basement for over 20 years with a sheet over it.I found it five years ago,I even have the Finish coupon for 10 cents off, and the Energy guide hanging off the inside..... Anyway, what do you think?

my 2c - Timer/lube

You were thinking the buttons rather than the timer?

Is this a superba, with the timer under the unit rather than on the front panel?

I believe some stop the timer until the fill is complete, or until the water is hot, etc. the schematic might tell.

If this is a pawl advance timer, perhaps like Joe's 1-18 washer it has started to strip the cog. But not completely stripped, so it works sometime...

It could very well be a "fluke". Maybe the timer got stuck. See what happens in the future. If it occurs again, you may need a new timer, or timer motor. If not, well it really was a fluke. Keep us posted. Luck be with you!

Strange things can happen...sometimes

It always helps to mention your model number so we can identify what components the dishwasher came with. Sometimes these timers will do funny things especially if you happened to open the machine and the timer reset prior to actually completely advancing from the end of the dry or cancel portion of a cycle to the actual start detent on the timer. It can cause the advance lever to miss the part of the timer that makes it go around and properly perform the cycle.I have done that many times.
I would say it is a fluke so just keep an eye on it.

AND... as I am sure anyone on this site will tell you, Never leave an appliance like a dishwasher, washer or especially a dryer going while you are away from the house. Any of them can malfunction and cause serious damage to your home which could have been averted if you were there to stop it from happening.

I have an old Superba that liked to get hung-up heating the water for the final rinse (Sani-Cycle. It would boil and boil, suddenly the pump would start and run for about 15 sec. then it would just stop untill I hand advance the time an increment. A squirt of contact-cleaner did the trick, and I haven't had a problem since.
