I've been helping my elderly Aunt clear some old paperwork out today and have come across some bills from the local Hoover dealer for repairs and a new machine. The first is for repairs carried out to a 3236H, then following a disasterous suspension collapse the replacement machine arrives, then an interloper in the form of a service on a 1334 cleaner, a service on the new A3138 and finally a set of new carbons for the same. Not sure where the model number on the last one was invented from. I'm surprised that it would have needed carbons at only 4 years old as it was only washing for one at the time. For 1980 the price of £194 for what is essentially a parts bin machine seems quite high to me, not sure how much the A3110 etc would have been at the time. I wish we could obtain the service spares at these prices now!

I don't know if Hoover ever fitted laminated brushes but if the did they might have just split rather than be fully worn. If they were just called to do a general service the belt and brushes would probably have been renewed anyway, regardless of condition.

A nice bit of history you stumbled across there.

I can confirm that the A3110 was a fair old whack of money more than the A3138, with Rumbelows flogging the former for ......

Whilst KAYS Catalogue was asking for considerably more, for their payment method. The A3110 only appeared once in KAYS .... Autumn/Winter 1980-81 ....

before being replaced in Spring/Summer 1981 by the Smoother Hoover 'Spare Parts Bin' machine, in the form of the A3140 Automatic AS2 ...

Thanks Paul, it looks like it was a bit more of a bargain than I expected it to be!I've been thinking about the AS1 machines recently after reading the recent thread on Australian Keymatics. I'm now wondering if the parts bin that was raided to build the A3138 was from the remains of the Oz A3072/455. The timeline (pardon the pun)seems to fit with the transfer of production to Meadowbank and I guess it would also explain the re-emergence of the proud door and the 720/740rpm (I can never remember which it is) spin.
Just a thought!
